1 Bedroom Villa in Manzanillo

At Villa Cocobolo you will find the peace and tranquility that you are looking for in your trip to Costa Rica.
We are located on a 2 acre oasis 50 meters above sea level and just 175 meters from the beautiful beach of Playa Manzanillo and a nice walk or quick drive to the breathtaking beach of Playa Hermosa.
Villa Cocobolo is surrounded by the rare Costa Rican Cocobolo hardwood tree as well as the renowned Pochote. The house is built in the loft style with second floor windows offering ocean, sunset, and mountain views. The bathroom and the bedroom are both located upstairs, and the bedroom’s sliding glass doors open to a private balcony allowing ocean views, and monkey and bird watching from the comfort of your bed.
The kitchen and entertaining areas are downstairs and have three patios, two of which are accessed by sliding glass doors for more ocean viewing and garden access.
Villa Cocobolo can accommodate 2 adults with children or possibly 3 adults.
Built and designed by the owner, the home has vaulted ceilings of Pochote beams with Laurel wood paneling and the verandas, patios, stairs, door and window frames are all accented in teak.
Villa Cocobolo has a fully equipped kitchen, comes completely furnished, and is surrounded by lush gardens, white gravel walkways, wrought iron gates for added privacy and private parking, pressurized hot/cold water, sky/cable tv, wifi, cleaning service, gardener and laundry services.
Also located on the premises is Qué Mae Brewing Company, our very own ocean/sunset view craft beer pub with a small restaurant to better serve our guests and the area's needs. We offer a steady rotation of at least 8 craft beers brewed on-site, a variety of cocktails and a simple menu with something for everyone.
Take time to walk along the trails of our property...Look for coatis, anteaters, jaguarundis, white face and howler monkeys, various bird species, butterflies and iguanas...Or find one of our sitting areas and just watch the wildlife and nature and listen to the ocean.
We are owner operated and have a small staff, but we can help with any questions or needs, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your stay with us...
THE BEACHES....
Because of rock reefs surrounding the entrance to Playa Manzanillo, this beach has it all. Here you can surf, snorkel, swim, kayak, fish, beach comb, and at the end of the day enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets the Nicoya Peninsula has to offer. The best part about Manzanillo beach is many days the only footprints you will find will be your own.
A few years ago Playa Hermosa was basically unknown, but recently discovered by surfers tired of the crowds and congestion of Santa Teresa, this beach is becoming increasingly more popular for tourists and surfers. Playa Hermosa lives up to its name and is truly beautiful offering great waves for surfers, swimming and beachcombing on a long and wide un-crowded beach.
To truly capitalize on all the peninsula has to offer, a car or 4 wheeler is a must, but still many of our guests prefer to walk the old beach road to Playa Hermosa enjoying the quiet and slow pace - stopping at the tide pools, private beaches, the waterfall, and always returning with stories of seeing more monkeys and iguanas than people.
THE SURF....
Yes, there is surf. A short drive south are the more popular surf spots of Playa Carmen (Mal Pais) and Santa Teresa, but just a few minutes away in Manzanillo and Playa Hermosa you can find waves for all levels of surfing (reef, point breaks, beach breaks, river mouths) – beginner to advanced – with crowd and attitude free, consistent surf.
For any surf questions feel free to contact the owner who has over 30 years surfing experience.
We can also set-up surf lessons with qualified instructors.
THE FISHING....
Manzanillo and north to the Bongo River is an area famous for fishing. You can go local and try your hand at hand-line fishing or bring your own gear and head out to the reefs at low tide. You may get lucky and hook sea bass, snook, red snapper, or a rooster. A quick run north will get you to The Bongo which is legendary for its fishing due to its river mouth - a great place to catch snook, just ask a local family who bought a car they call “robalo” meaning “snook” in Spanish. All the money they earned to buy the car came from selling their snook/robalo catches from the Bongo.
We can also book fishing tours for you – just ask.

Summary: I read the review complaining about missing pool tiles, and I have been thinking about what constitutes value in a vacation rental. I guess value occurs when reality meets expectations. My wife and I stayed at Cocobolo for eight nights in March, followed two weeks later by four days in Cancun. In such places as Maui and Cancun, the native people, plants and wildlife have been eradicated to make room for wall-to-wall hotels, each with its own private chunk of beach, a pool and a place to get drunk while being catered to by white-jacketed servants. If this is your idea of heaven, then by all means go to Maui. We found Trey helpful and friendly, attentive and supportive. He did not, however, make our drinks. Cocobolo is "in amongst 'em." The roads are terrible and dusty, but Cocobolo gets much less dust than does anyplace six miles away in Santa Teresa. We enjoyed buying local fish and produce in S.T. and Cobano, and picked up our de rigeur souvenir machete at the hardware store in Cobano. Trey took us fishing one day, and we drove the Pacific Coastal Highway, i.e. the beach at low tide, and we hit nearly 60 mph on the smooth, open sand. Of course, we had rented a car. The beaches are extensive and very sparsely populated, despite there being good fishing and a shallow, gradual, sandy slope into the water. I estimate I waded out 100 yards and was no more than waist-high, except when Manzanillo's famous surf came crashing in. Great for beachcombing, suntanning and cloud watching. Monkeys in the trees every day -- both howlers and white-faced. We saw violaceous trogons, cinnamon hummingbirds and other exotic-to-us birds. I don't know if the air conditioning worked, because we never turned it on. Lovely weather throughout. The "missing" screening around the pools was not missing. It was being installed, and the hooks had just been welded to the posts. There is no law against writing a negative review, but I can say we are happy the guests at the other villa were much less dour than our predecessor. Negative: the one thing that caught me off guard was that I expected somebody else's vacation house that was being let for weeks for income. Trey has three or four (didn't count 'em, and they are scattered) on the property. Would we go back? Probably not, but only because our history says we go forward. We had a great time. Thanks, Trey!
