General information about Borkow
The name Borkow comes from the old Slavic borŭ for combat or bor for spruce. The place name means something like place of fight or spruce forest.
The "ow" in the place name is typical for Slavic settlements (church foundation and colonization ran in parallel).
Thus, the founding of the place Borkow is well before 1283, as it was erroneously mentioned in the Borkow commemorative publication of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the founding (in 1983).
Especially since the knight of Maltza (h) n had Borkow, Below and Dennis (Kossaten Dörfer) overwritten as property in 1248.
The tower hill on our property was only built in the middle of the 15th Century. It served to protect against attackers and wild animals. The tower hill is a listed building. From our property you can reach the "tower hill island" via a small bridge.
General information about the Borkow manor house
We acquired the manor house, which is in need of renovation, in 1996 and immediately started the renovation work.
In 1997 we opened our manor house for our guests for the first time.
The historical development of Borkow is closely linked to our manor house.
Unlike in most manor houses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, there was not a traditional family that owned the Borkow manor house for several centuries. The manor house had many and very different owners.
There is a legend about the old manor house located in the camel.
This much smaller manor house is said to have sunk in the small lake behind the teacher's residence (red brick house next to the small church). The legend also says that the house can still be seen in good weather today. As with all legends, this cannot be proven exactly. But there is often a little spark of truth in it.
The origins of the current manor house were probably built around 1608 - before the Thirty Years' War.
The Borkow estate was designed in the style of a horseshoe.
The manor house was in the middle and the stables were on either side. You have to think of it as a small village. Among other things, there was a nursery with a greenhouse. This greenhouse was only dismantled by a gardener from Dabel after the Second World War.
There was also a carpentry shop in the estate. This still existed when we bought the property in 1996. Before the dilapidated joinery was torn down, the machines that still existed were brought to Kobrow in the local museum village. They can still be admired there today. A pile of stones with small remnants of the carpentry still serves as a silent contemporary witness.
The estate was surrounded by a wall. Individual parts were still visible until the beginning of the 21st century.
As part of a road construction project in 2001, the remains of the original wall were unfortunately destroyed. So nothing of the ancient wall has been preserved. To our regret, the old avenue of chestnut trees was removed from the monument protection program and much of the victims of the road construction measures afterwards.
In general, one can say that the Borkow estate must have been a good source of income for centuries. This certainly allowed the owners to live appropriately for their time.
Old finds from this period confirm this upscale lifestyle. The Reichhoff family (for more information, see period 1850 - 1928) was in possession of dishes from Copeland & Spode that were imported from England. Parts of branded porcelain from Silesia could also be found.
There was also an Art Nouveau tiled stove from this period. This was well hidden and had all the trials and tribulations of the 20th Century (including the 2 World Wars and dismantling by the Russians) survived very well. We discovered this during the renovation work.
