🏔️ WHAT TO SEE AND DO ON THE KENAI PENINSULA 🏔️
If you are starting your journey in Anchorage, here are the highlights of what I recommend:
NATIONAL PARKS. While it may be tempting to go north to Denali National Park, keep in mind that Alaska is a big state, and you will spend so much of your limited time just getting there. The Kenai Peninsula is close and has everything the rest of Alaska has to offer, and more! Including not just one, but THREE national parks: Kenai Fjords National Park on the eastern coast of the peninsula, Lake Clark National Park just on the other side of the Cook Inlet, and Katmai National Park further south at the mouth of the Cook Inlet.
ANCHORAGE TO KENAI
From Anchorage, you will want to drive south to the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet. I recommend making the following stops at Girdwood and Portage:
1. Alyeska Resort. Take the tram to the top of Mt Alyseka. The view is spectacular. Pay a little more and have lunch up there.
2. Portage Glacier. Take the boat ride to see the glacier.
3. Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The animals have all been rescued, and it's amazing to get so close to these wild animals. Check out the TV series "Alaska Animal Rescue" about it on National Geographic/Disney+.
WELCOME TO THE KENAI
After these stops, continue on to the Kenai Peninsula. The drive through the Chugach mountains is beautiful! The city of Kenai is a good central location to everything you want to see on the peninsula. 1.5 hours to Homer, 1 hour to Cooper Landing, 2 hours to Seward, 2 hours to Girdwood and Portage, and 2 hours to Hope.
1️⃣ Homer
🦦 Katchemak Bay and the Homer Spit offer breathtaking views. See lots of ocean wildlife including adorable sea otters.
🦦 Catch a halibut fishing charter, and they fill up fast.
🦦 Last summer we decided to go kayaking instead, and we were so glad we did. Breathtaking experience for our first time to go kayaking!
2️⃣ Cooper Landing
🐟 If you're there during the salmon runs, hike up to the Russian River Falls (easy hike) and see the salmon jumping up the falls.
🐟 We didn't see any bears when we were there. It's worth the hike to see the falls even if the salmon aren't running.
🐟 You can book a river fishing trip on the beautiful Kenai River.
3️⃣ Skilak Lake Loop
🐻 From Sterling or Cooper Landing, you can take the loop to see Skilak Lake. It's a dirt road, but well maintained, and worth it.
🐻 Lots of hiking and camping and fishing options. The lake is so beautiful! Stop at all the scenic outlooks.
🐻 Great place for you to see bears too.
4️⃣ Kenai Fjords National Park
🦭 Drive to Seward and catch a day cruise to see the fjords. Get the 8 hour cruise that includes dinner at Fox Island.
🦭 You're going to see glaciers, seals, otters, puffins, and even whales. We a saw a humpback whale jump and three killer whales.
5️⃣ Historic Kenai
🫎 Explore the historic parts of this once Russian settlement. Many Russian descendants still live here, and the Russian Orthodox Church is the oldest in North America.
🫎 The Kenai Reindeer Farm doesn't offer tours on site, but they will bring their prize reindeer out to see you at our property.
🫎 Also check out Kenai Beach for some scenic views of the river and Cook Inlet.
🫎 If you're a dog lover, pick up a tour of the Iditerod dog sled team kennels that train in Kenai.
🫎 You will want to get a meal at Louie's Steak and Seafood for the real Alaska dining experience. Make reservations in advance because this place is popular!
6️⃣ Hope
This picturesque town is a place where you seem to step back in time to an earlier age of Alaskan history. You can find some great white water rafting and salmon fishing there. The town is also famous for gold panning.
