La cabecera municipal de Livingston se encuentra en la parte oeste de la desembocadura del río Dulce, en la parte interna de la bahía de Amatique.
Livingston colinda al norte con el municipio de San Luis (Petén), Belice, el golfo de Honduras y el mar Caribe; del lado este con el municipio de Puerto Barrios y la bahía de Amatique.
Historia de Livingston
En el año 1802 un bergantín procedente de la isla de Roatán, Honduras, arribó al lado oeste de la desembocadura de Río Dulce. Llegó tripulado por Marcos Sánchez Díaz, originario de Haití, que venía acompañado por la tripulación de raza negra.
En mayo de 1806 se establecieron los primeros pobladores del lugar, al que bautizaron con el nombre de Buga, que en garífuna significa boca.
Livingston fue fundado en noviembre de 1831. Fue un puerto importante para el comercio hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XX, pues era la conexión más importante de Guatemala con el Caribe.
