Positive: Authentic Japanese house and living experience. We were honoured to be able to stay in this sort of property during our visit to Japan. John and his partner gave us some great advice about tours and local restaurants and were very friendly. The house exceptionally clean.
Negative: On the flip side as two westerners over 60, the lack of any sort of chair to relax on (even low Japanese style), was a drawback after a busy day sightseeing. We also didn’t mind sharing the bathroom, but were surprised to be told no showering after 8am (until the afternoon and had to let them know if we wanted to use it then) and that the water was not warm during this time for the one shower we had during this time. I do think also some knives would be useful in the kitchen area to enable guests to cut fruit. These things meant that although we loved the property, buy into non-western facilities- for us two nights was ample.
Summary: Fascinating stay in authentic Japanese house - a very non-western experience. Hosts very friendly!
