Attractions:
The more than 1050-year-old Zerbst / Anhalt invites you to many discoveries. Here you can walk in the footsteps of Catherine the Great and Martin Luther (see also the tourist route "Catherine II", Luther Trail and Culture + Leisure).
Here is a selection of what else to see.
The market:
With Roland and Butterjungfer here are two very old landmarks of the city. Reverend, as a symbol of urban freedom and jurisdiction, the Roland has been made of wood since 1385 - and since 1445 the figure made of sandstone.
The golden buttermaid standing on a high pole has been guarding the market rights in Zerbst for many centuries as a symbol. The Tuscan fountain, just nearby, also adorns the square for a very long time, reminiscent of bygone times when there were no water pipes.
Of the many beautiful town houses that once shaped the image of the square, are after the bombing on 16. April 1945 only a few people stopped.
At the market stands with the city church of St. Nicolai the ruins of the once largest hall church Anhalt.
The castle freedom:
The two beautiful Kavalierhäuser links were rebuilt in 1707 from old substance in the style of the Baroque. They served as homes of the highest court officials. Today, they are used as administrative and judicial buildings. In the house no. 12, today's city hall of the city Zerbst / Anhalt, also the museum collection unique to Germany to "Katharina the large one" is accommodated.
The right side of the square is dominated by the former palace guard, which serves as a residential and commercial building with boarding house and restaurant. Next to it, set back a little bit, is the building of the lodge "Friedrich zur Permanente", which was built at the turn of the century as the seat of the Freemasons. The long building next to it was once the Bartholomew School. Later, for some years, the printing plant for the "Zerbst Extra post office" was located.
The front part of the castle-freedom characterizes the St. Bartholomäikirche with the individually adjoining bell tower, popularly called the "Thick Tower". Already consecrated in 1215, became St. Bartholomäi Stiftskirche and Hofkirche, suffered heavy destruction during the war and is still partially restored, still used as a Protestant parish church. Inside are gravestones of the princely family, valuable frescoes and a panel painting by Lukas Cranach d. J., which represents the baptism of Christ in the Jordan.
The castle garden:
Over an area of 153900m², the castle garden extends to the castle pond.
Coming from there and crossing a small tributary of the Nuthe, one reaches a remarkably touristy place. On the square in front of the former princely riding hall is the only monument in Germany in memory of the Zerbst daughter daughter Sophie Auguste Friederike of Anhalt-Zerbst, who as mighty Russian Czarina Catherine the Great went down in world history.
Right next door, the former princely riding hall, today the Zerbster Stadthalle, still shines in the most beautiful Baroque splendor, while many buildings in the castle garden and also the princely residence suffered severe war damage. The Stadthalle is currently being used for events of all kinds, such as B. Concerts, conferences, balls or exhibitions used. A little hidden on a small hill stands the Chinese teahouse, next to the walls of the Marstalls and the associated residential building.
The park is dominated by the surviving wing of Zerbst castle.
The city wall:
If the old city wall could tell, you certainly needed a lot of time in Zerbst / Anhalt. Already since the end of the 13th Century she protects the city on the Heidetor and encloses it since the beginning of the 15th. Century complete. Even before there were protective walls against attackers and unwanted visitors. To date, the old city fortification system with a length of more than 4 kilometers and three of formerly five city gates is still almost completely preserved.
Songs and legends tell about events and historical times connected with the old fortified wall. From all generations it is maintained with great love as a monument and testimony of the rich city history and preserved for posterity.
