11 Bedroom House in Ilminster

OVERVIEW Whitelackington Manor is a welcoming and comfortable grade II listed, historic Manor House. It has been recently refurbished to a high standard and is the perfect place for family or friends to get together in the Somerset countryside. The house sleeps 20 in ten bedrooms, and a further 4 in the "loft dormitory". It has large, beautiful and professionally tended gardens, with a heated pool and an astro-turf tennis court. By arrangement the house can also be used to host corporate or wellness retreats, weddings (up to 80 guests currently) or as a film / photography location. BEDROOMS There are ten elegant and recently refurbished double / twin bedrooms spread over the upper two floors. All of the rooms have been individually designed to make the most of the house's features, some are more modern and quirky, others more traditional. Eight of the rooms are en-suites and just two share a bathroom (though both of those have their own basin in the room). The house also has an en-suite loft dormitory that can sleep a further four guests in slightly less privacy, but no less comfort. Of the ten bedrooms, four are fixed as doubles (two superkings, two kingsized) and the remaining six can be setup either as superking doubles, or as twin singles. LIVING AREAS The kitchen seats 10-12 guests, the dining room next door can seat up to 20, and for larger gatherings the hall can seat up to 80 for dinner. There are several rooms for guests to relax in, including the elegant and traditional large drawing room, the cosy library / TV room, a snooker room, the hall (a versatile room that can be used as a giant playroom or a more formal seating / dining room) and the loft (a dormitory / playroom / TV room). As well as the usual card and board games, there is a table-tennis table, table football table and the snooker table to keep the more restless members of your party busy and entertained. PRACTICALITIES The Manor's kitchen is well equipped with an Aga cooker, two electric ovens and a large induction hob. There is a separate utility room with a washing machine and a tumble dryer. There is a food larder, three fridges, three freezers and an ice machine. Baby cots and high-chairs are available on request. GARDENS The house is set in around 3 acres of gardens, which include several large lawns, perfect for playing games or just lying in, beautifully landscaped and tended flower beds, trees - including a large oak that's over 200 years old - a heated outdoor pool, an astro-turf tennis court and a beautiful pond. Directly outside the kitchen is a sunken terraced patio, complete with dining area for breakfasts or lunches in the summer sun, which looks onto the South lawn, with its cast bronze fountain, and beyond across the fields and woods that surround the house. The main garden is to the East of the house, with a two-tiered lawn, vast enough for a decent game of 5-a-side football, kick-the-can, mega game of croquet, or just a civilised stroll around the lawns, flowerbeds and down to the pond. The pool is in its own walled garden to the South-West of the house, closed off to prevent unaccompanied access by children, but the walls also create something of a heat trap, making the garden a great place to lie in the summer sun, enjoy the heat and read a book or the paper. The tennis court is just through the gate. The gardens are excellent for kids to play and learn in, with many great hiding places, areas to explore and wildlife to see, from tadpoles (in the spring) and fishes to pheasants, woodpeckers and even owls. Please note though, there are also some dangers, such as the ha-ha (a 6 foot vertical drop bounding one of the lawns), the pond, the fountain, and the swimming pool, which are obviously all important dangers for those who can't swim, and the sunken trampoline, which is great fun for kids of all ages, but also potentially a hazard. Children under 6 should not be left unattended in the garden at any time please. SETTING & LOCAL AREA The house is set in the middle of the Dillington Estate and is surrounded by farmland and woods. There are several footpaths that can be used to explore the Estate from the house, either for circular walks, through the woods or perhaps over the road to Dillington House and back, or across the countryside to the pub at Dinnington. There is one cottage near the house, lived in by Bob and Yvette, who help us keep an eye on the place, and adjacent is the Whitelackington church of St Mary's, but apart from on a Sunday when you might hear the melodious worship of the organ, the house is peaceful and private. Nearby there are several pubs, some within walking distance - like the Dinnington Docks, which is about a 45 minute walk - others a little further, but worth cycling or driving to, such as the Lord Poulett Arms. Barrington House, a National Trust house with gardens open to the public, is nearby, as is Dillington House. The Dennis Chinaworks in Shepton Beauchamp are also very close and worth a visit, for the tea rooms as much as anything else. There are several local cider producers whose orchards and presses are worth seeing, Perry's Cider in Dowlish Wake being one, and Julian Temperley's cider and cider brandy distillery over at Burrow Hill another. A little further away the beach at Lyme Regis and walks along the Jurassic coastline are 40mins or so to the South, and the Hauser and Wirth gallery near Bruton is 40 mins or so to the East. ACCESS The Dillington Estate is very easily accessed by car just off the A303, and the house has private car parking space for as many cars as are needed. The train stations of Crewkerne (15 min drive), Castle Cary and Taunton (30 mins each) are all nearby.. Keys to the house will be given by the staff at Dillington along with an introduction to the house and its facilities. The staff at Dillington Estate are also available to help with anything unexpected.
