9 Bedroom House in Saranac Lake
Welcome to Camp To-No-Na, a truly gracious home nestled on the eastern shore of Lower Saranac Lake, NY just minutes from Lake Placid. We are featured in Adirondack Life Magazine Fall/20144. The Camp appears to have literally jumped out of a Ralph Lauren magazine cover with all of the period details intact, the Cross Beamed Great room with mounted animals lining the original wooden walls and the enormous original Fireplace made from huge local stone. Camp To-No-Na is literally steps from the waters edge with breathtaking sunset views and access to 25 Miles of unspoiled waterways. We are very lucky to have almost 500 feet of private lake frontage and only 40 or so houses on our whole lake!! The remainder is state owned and just as pristine as you might imagine! We wake to Loons every morning and Bald eagles are a common sight! This home was originally built in the early 1900's as a summer residence for a wealthy homeowner, and has been lovingly cared for and upgraded to accommodate today's lifestyles. The house has two acres of wooded land and complete and easy access from the town of Saranac Lake just a couple of miles away- 12 miles or so to Lake Placid and just a 20 minute ride to the local airport (SLK). Our home has ample parking in two locations just in front of the house and two separate smaller lots. The front yard is landscaped and the remainder is kept as natural as possible with woods and of course the shoreline. The Front entry to Camp To-No-Na is through a large vestible with stuffed animals and period details are at the center of the house which is shaped somewhat like a V facing to the lake. Two steps up, the old dining room is now what we use as a very comfortable octagonal shaped family room with wood stove and very comfy leather chairs and cushy sofa. A Dutch door exits to the custom twig and post deck and lots of windows facing the lake. The original true divided light Windows to the lake in this home are absolutely fabulous and you'll find them so numerous, the light is incredible! The butlers pantry is to the left thru a swinging door with the antique built ins and wet bar. The Kitchen is unique as it has a big ol' wood family table that we use just about every day! Again, multiple windows looking right to the lake. The kitchen has original built ins, and additional basic built in shelves from the period. There is an island in the center with custom wood for the top and cedar posts for the supports! Exposed brick and another Hoisier type cabinet and extra counter space. A stainless steel Refrigerator, two dishwashers, a Six Burner Gas Stainless stove, and lots of room for the whole family. This kitchen as you can see by the photo's has some original artwork done to the walls (this was done by Granny Hanes when she broke her leg one season and just had an artistic moment), and we have done our best to preserve this and other kitchen attributes to keep the old feel of an Adirondack Great Camp but with everything you might need for a Gourmand chef- modern appliances (six burner stove), utensils, serving platters, cookware, you name it! Just off the Family Room is the first of two outside decked spaces. This deck is again facing the lake and really almost on top of the water. It is newly finished with period bent wood cedar twig design and has direct access to the rear yard and lakeside. The large Weber Grill is located at this spot. There is also what's called a woodsman's bath off the main hall. It has an outside entrance and an entrance off the kitchen area. It has a newer full shower and original sink and toilet. During the time of formal living, anyone coming into the house from hunting, fishing, etc...had to enter through this room first, to wash up and make themselves presentable. It is quite nice and we use it as our powder room and has a full shower for guests. We also have an outdoor shower on the lake side just off the kitchen and down the back stairs. It is complete with a surround of Birch Bark and views of the lake. We all use this as much as possible and the views are just spectacular!!! No really spectacular !!! To the right of the large vestibule and the main staircase is the entrance to the Great Room. It is an amazing huge gracious room with original wood work and a soaring white cross beamed ceiling. As with the entire home the hardwood floors are gorgeous and the entire room is surrounded by true divided light windows (even to the screened in porch). You will find period pieces thru-out and certainly in the Great room with stuffed animals everywhere, a Sponson Boat suspended above the old Baby Grand Piano (Brand new insides) and furnished with large overstuffed leather sofa's and a huge Dining Table for the whole family! add on's are available. We find ourselves in the Great room almost every evening playing board games or cards by the fire. There is also a custom Shuffleboard table to enjoy!! The Great Room has two large glass doors to the screened-in porch, which is almost as large as the Great Room. We have an original cure chair that I have fallen asleep in on many occasions with my book in hand, and original wicker and rattan furniture to relax and enjoy the views of the lake and sunset! The house is centered as somewhat of a 'V' shape off of the central entry hall. As you come up to the second floor you will find the center landing and a small screened in sleeping porch. Off of the hall are the main Five family bedrooms. The Master bedroom is identical in shape to the Family Room downstairs, and is Octagon shaped with windows galore right out to the lake! This room has very tall ceilings and a private bath with an original cast iron tub (just delicious). There is also a King size custom made twig and post bed and a walk-in-closet... Down the main hall are four additional bedrooms. The first lakeside room again has lots of windows, big closet and two twin beds. This is the room we refer to as the 'hump room. The second Bedroom is a corner lakeside room and you guessed it, lots of windows and a large closet. There are two twin beds and an antique crib and small window seat. The next Bedroom is on the front of the house and has three twin beds and a large closet--windows windows!! our nieces and nephews love this room! And the next Bedroom is on the front of the house with two twin beds and a large closet. Just off of the main hall here is also another large bath with a period iron tub too! Most of the twin beds are from the period and are a mix of brass and metal and some wood- all are from the original family stock along with the classic mirrored furniture and chairs- all updated mattresses of course... The house was originally set up for the Family side and the servants side. We of course chose to decorate and use all of the home for our family. The next four bedrooms all have a single twin bed and there are two baths in this wing, both with claw foot tubs. Two are on the lakeside and two facing the front of the house...these rooms are just a bit smaller but just as delightful though not quite as large as the 'family side'. The separate linen closet is on this level and you will find all of the towels and linens necessary for a house this large. There is also another staircase that leads off the back hall and comes next to the entry of the mud room off the kitchen. There you will find an extra refrigerator and washer & dryer/utilities. This home is truly a great example of how families lived and worked in the Adirondacks. We have been very careful with adding updates such as two zone central heat, wiring upgrades, plumbing upgrades, lighting, and general improvements...always with the thought that Camp To-No-Na should stay as close to how she was built, a Beautiful Grand and Gracious Camp in the Adirondack's!! It was really important to us to have ALL of our bedrooms on the second level of Camp, not in the basement - lots of sunshine and the lake breezes to appreciate- this was very important to us!!!
