Our location is ideal for walkers, cyclists, surfers and those who want to experience village life. We welcome families with children and can also cater for families with four legged friends (Maximum 2 Dogs Please We do charge £10 per booking for guests with dogs for the extra cleaning required). Arosfa House is superbly located at the beginning of a country lane which leads directly to the sheltered and secluded "Sugar Sands" beach, this beach has been voted by the Independant and Telegraph as one of the best beaches in Britain, and the best kept secret in Northumberland. The rear of the house looks out onto farmland with fantastic views of the sea. Our home has a large fenced garden so ideal for children and the family dog to play. We have a lean to attached to the house which has a coat rack for wet clothes, towels for drying dogs, a tumble dryer and a secured bike rack for our cyclist guests. St Peter and St Paul’s church in the village is a grade 1 listed building, dating from the 11th century. It has a beautiful Saxon chancel arch and a strong Norman tower. Within walking distance is a Co-Op convenience store which sells everything you could need. If you walk to the beach and turn right a coastal walk will take you to the lovely village of Boulmer, this is one of Northumberlands last genuine fishing villages and little has changed here in the last 100 years. Boulmer has had an extremely questionable reputation for smuggling. In the 18th and 19th century Boulmer was notorious for its involvement with smugglers and pirates who came from all over the coast to deal their ill gotten gains of salt, tobacco and spirits. The village pub " The Fishing Boat Inn" (or FBI as known by us locals) was the headquarters of the smuggling activity. Probably the most well known smuggler was William Faa, the king of the gypsy community. Although no longer a den of inequity the Fishing Boat Inn is a fantastic place to walk where you can sit and have a drink, eat dinner and watch the small Northumberland Coble fishing boats pull in their catch of cod, crabs and lobsters. Boulmer is quite unique in that it doesn't have a harbour, the traditional fishing Cobles have to be pulled ashore and can be seen resting at low tide on the beach and rocky outcrops. The main catch at Boulmer is Salmon from June to end of August and Crabs / Lobsters out of season, as such it is a popular place for fishermen. The rocky outcrops with impenetrable weed beds, typical of the Northumberland coastline make large catches of Cod and Coalfish possible in the winter months. If you fancy a go at fishing you will need to tempt the Codling out of the weed beds using what I have heard being the best bait "Peeler Crab"....Good Luck. The main town of Alnwick is a short drive Pronounced to rhyme with ‘panic’, that’s perhaps what you would do if you missed out on a visit to this bustling medieval market town. Twisting cobbled streets with an eclectic collection of individual shops are teamed with some of the country’s top attractions, including Alnwick Castle Dubbed the Windsor of the North. Alnwick Castle was the location for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. Alongside is the Duchess of Northumberland’s blooming marvellous creation – The Alnwick Garden. Dine among the treetops of The Alnwick Garden in the fairytale setting of one of the world’s largest tree houses, or enjoy afternoon tea with a pot of Earl Grey tea, which originates from nearby Howick Hall in a cosy café. Whether it’s rifling through the shelves of Barter Books, one of the UK’s largest second hand bookshops, housed in the town’s old railway station or catching a performance at Alnwick Playhouse; toe-tapping to live music in a lively inn or exploring the Bailiffgate Museum which brings to life the people and places of Northumberland, there’s always something to do in Alnwick. You will never be short of stunning sights and unforgettable days out when you visit us. Of course, there's the world famous Hadrian's Wall, Roman Britain's biggest building project that still dominates the county's landscape almost 2,000 years after it was constructed. American newspaper USA Today described the wall as "better than Stonehenge". There are signs of ancient civilisation in the mysterious cup and ring stone carvings that dot the county, early Christianity was nurtured at the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland Coast and Northumberland was often at the centre of various disputes between England and Scotland. If you are a lover of gardens and grand stately homes, then Northumberland has plenty to offer. Of course you will have heard of The Alnwick Garden, the finest contemporary garden in the UK, but other equally delightful gardens can be found at Howick Gardens & Arboretum and Cragside Estate to name but a few. If you are unlucky enough to have timed your visit to Northumberland during one of the few rainy days, there are plenty of all weather attractions to enthral you. Woodhorn Museum & Northumberland Archivess is home to a fascinating exhibition on the mining heritage of Northumberland as well as ever changing interactive exhibitions. Museums and galleries can also be found within many of our great castles and along Hadrian's Wall. And last but by no means least, there is the Northumberland countryside, home to some of our greatest landscapes. However, these are not just pretty landscapes; they are landscapes that are perfect for outdoor activities, with everything from walking and cycling, to fishing and wildlife watching. Northumberland is England’s most northern county and being largely rural with an interlacing network of lightly-trafficked quiet roads, it is a gem for cycle touring. Family friendly cycle routesMountain bike routes around Kielder Water & Forest Park Cycling is an excellent and efficient way to get around Northumberland; a bike will get you to places cars can never reach!
