Uncle Bill's Cottage is a gorgeous farm house on a sheep and beef farm just 20 minutes from Ohakune. As gold award winners in the Family Friendly category of Bach of the Year awards, we understand the importance of creating an enjoyable holiday break for everyone! Tucked away in the beautiful Orautoha Valley, this is the perfect spot to enjoy quality time together away from the stresses of city life - and without wifi or cell coverage. Breathe in the fresh country air, and be surrounded by the tranquility of nature. The cottage itself is over 120 years old, and was originally the home of one of the early settlers of the valley, our Great Uncle Bill. It has been beautifully restored while keeping the family history alive and celebrating the quirky touches that Uncle Bill put on the place. With 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (plus an outdoor bath in the garden!), it is perfect for couples, families or a group of friends. It’s safe, clean, and comfortable and best of all you don’t have to clean it at the end of your visit - all you have to do is enjoy yourselves. There’s a great wood burner and a huge bin of firewood to keep you warm and toasty in winter. There are oil heaters in every bedroom, and electric blankets on the beds. All linen is supplied, with beds made up ready for you; and plenty of extra linen and bedding should you need it. The kitchen is fully set up with a modern oven and ceramic cooktop, dishwasher and espresso machine; and in the fridge you’ll find some fresh free range eggs, jam made from fruit grown on the farm, and marshmallows for toasting on the fire down by the river. With magnificent views over the farm from the decks surrounding the cottage there is always somewhere to sit to watch the animals; or to just sit back and catch the breeze as you watch the river go by at the bottom of the garden. There is plenty of space for the children to run around, and heaps to keep them entertained – from helping feed the horse, dogs and chickens; swimming or kayaking in your own private section of the river; feeding the eels; or riding a sled towed behind the quad bike. For the little ones there is a balance bike and a trike; plus a playground with swings and slide, a play hut, and even an old quad bike for all those imaginary adventures. We are close to all the attractions the Ruapehu region is famous for, from fishing, mountain biking, hiking, tramping, skiing and sightseeing. Turoa Skifield is a short drive up from the base of Mt Ruapehu, and Whakapapa Skifield is just 45 minutes away. There are 14 mountain bike tracks to choose from in the region, so you are spoiled for choice. We are right on the National Cycleway heading to The Bridge to Nowhere Track, which winds through the 'Valley of Abandoned Dreams' to the Whanganui River, with 35km of spectacular scenery and wild beauty. The stream in front of the cottage is a spawning river for trout, so during the fishing season (1 November – 1 May) there are always plenty of trout, both rainbow and brown. For keen fishermen, you have the exclusive use of the Orautoha Stream as it runs through our property, approximately 4km, from right in front of the cottage. The Manganui O te Ao River, world famous for its deep gorges and beautiful pools, is just 5 minutes away. If you are new to fishing and would just like to have a go, we have an adult’s rod and net available for you to use.
