Twazabarn is situated in Appleby in Westmorland with views of the Lake District in a quiet cul de sac overlooking Appleby Castle, and only 100 metres from a local, 17th century, real cask ale public house/popular restaurant serving good quality food.
Appleby in Westmorland is a very attractive North Pennine town with all modern amenities including a swimming pool, cricket ground, bowling green, golf course and a good selection of traditional shops selling local produce as well as good pubs serving real ales and great food.
In Appleby, you can board the Settle-Carlisle Railway which was the last great mainline railway to be built in this country. Consisting of 72 miles of track with 17 major viaducts (including the famous one at Ribblehead) spanning the ravines and 14 tunnels and is advertised as the most picturesque route to Scotland from England.
A short walk from Appleby into the Pennines you can see High Cup Nick - the famous nick, a deep chasm on the Pennine fellside and is a dramatic geological formation at the top of High Cup Gill overlooking the best glaciated valley in Northern England. At the head of this perfectly formed U-shaped Valley is one of the highlights of the Pennine Way, described by Wainwright as an ‘unforgettable sight’, a ‘natural wonder’. Here you can see the grey-blue dolerite crags which also form High Force and Cauldron Snout.
Appleby is perfectly situated for exploring the fells of the North Pennines, Yorkshire dales, Lake district, or the green valleys of the River Eden either by cycle or on foot.
The Eden Valley is surprisingly little known, but those discovering it, visit time and again. It lies between the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Lake District. To the south is the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and to the North lie Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall.
Hadrian’s Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It stretches seventy-three miles from Wallsend near Newcastle, across the neck of England to the Solway in North West Cumbria, and stands today as a reminder of the past glories of one of the world’s greatest empires.
The River Eden is entirely Cumbrian and is one of the few large rivers in England that flows northwards. The source of the river is on the high limestone fells near the North Yorkshire border and makes its way across eastern Cumbria, with the hills of the North Pennines to the East, and the fells of the Lake District to the west, to Carlisle. The river flows through Appleby, famous for its annual Appleby Horse Fair.
