2 Bedroom House in Cupar, Fife
The Old Farm Office is part of the traditional stone-built farm steadings, retaining all the charm of buildings that are over 150 years old but renovated to modern standards. The open-plan kitchen/dining/sitting room which comprises the whole downstairs (apart from the toilet and shower room) is ideal for spending time together. On the landing upstairs, there is a separate lounge room with TV. This room has space for a folding bed if required. It connects on to the master bedroom, with the second bedroom accessed through the master. This arrangement is perfect for families: the second bedroom is in a combed room above the arch, with Velux windows facing west up the Tay, taking in some of the most amazing sunsets you’ll ever see. (The windows have blinds so you needn’t be woken up at dawn.) It’s a brilliant holiday den for children, with two single beds. If it’s not family or close friends going in the second bedroom, do bear in mind that it is only accessed through the master bedroom. A travel cot and high chair are available on request. Renewable electricity is supplied by a 20kW wind turbine on the hill, with a green tariff from Ecotricity for when the wind isn’t blowing. Hot water and space heating are provided by the 75kW log boiler, burning timber from the farm. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. There are so many fantastic strolls right here, the farm is right next to the Fife Coastal Path and there are fabulous beaches nearby. If you have horses, please bring them too but give us a call beforehand so we can make sure we have all the facilities you need. There are a couple of paddocks, a field shelter and loose boxes, space to park a horsebox and, of course, plenty of places to take them. If you or friends have a campervan or caravan, there is a large area of hardstanding adjacent to the holiday house, which you can use, so friends or family can stay outside but share the more spacious and civilised facilities inside. The Old Farm Office is separated from the farmhouse by about 30m, across the lawn and on a separate level. It is completely isolated from everyone but if you do need anything, we are not far away and happy to recommend local attractions. If you’re not familiar with Fife, it’s Scotland but with sunshine and without midges. Come here if you want to get away from it all. The over-riding feeling you will get here at Fliskmillan is tranquillity. Yes, it’s only half an hour to St. Andrews, Dundee and Perth but why would you want to leave? Fair enough, make the trip to Kinshaldy if miles of empty sandy beach are your thing; you can even use the new Fife Coastal Path, which runs right past the farm. Or you could stay here and enjoy the company of dozens of species of birds attracted by our rewilding projects. If you want to stretch your legs a bit more, there are loads of opportunities for running, with no need to step on tarmac, and Pitmedden has some of the best single-track mountain biking in Scotland. It’s not that we don’t have visitor attractions. The oldest record of whisky being distilled is from Lindores Abbey, which has been developed into the new Lindores Abbey Distillery in Newburgh. Dundee has the new V&A, Perth the Horsecross, there’s Falkland Palace and St. Andrews has plenty for enthusiasts of golf, beer or ice cream. Newburgh has a newly refurbished co-op which is open until 10pm and supermarket delivery is available from Sainsbury, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda (not Ocado yet). We are remote. But we are also green, so we want to encourage guests to use public transport, or at least an electric vehicle. If you do have an EV, we have a free (J1772) charging point which is, of course powered by renewable energy, so bring your car and tour Fife with a clear conscience. If you don’t have an EV but would like to hire one for your stay, let us know and we’ll sort something out. If you are catching the train up and need a lift, let us know. We are not always around but if we are, we will be happy to pick you up. Ladybank and Cupar stations are about the same distance away. Ladybank is just south of the point where the lines to Aberdeen and Inverness split, so has more services. It also has free parking. From Cupar or Newburgh, you can get the Flexi-bus right to us. The Flexi-bus provides a service where there is no regular bus route, so it will take you to Gauldry, for instance, where you can get a bus into Dundee, or Cupar, where you can get a train to pretty much anywhere. We are keen cyclists, so if you want to cycle here, we can provide storage and a range of tools and help. If you’re coming by horse-drawn carriage, the road up to the farm from the Tay is steep but we can give you a tow.
