While the residence itself dates back to 1821, it was renovated to have all of the 21st century features that one could want. Stainless steel appliances, crown molding, two fireplaces, granite counter tops, hardwood floors, and an open floor plan greet those who enter the home. Central air and a brand new heating unit (2017) allow for comfortable control of the climate no matter what time of year it is. A large ensuite bathroom, complete with rainfall shower head, makes the master bedroom a sanctuary of relaxation.A large third story loft area provides room for extra company. This four bedroom, two and a half bath home is the perfect residence for rental at any time of the year. The Old Academy is located one block away from the Bennington Battle Monument and the Old First Church. Historic homes fill the area with a sense of both prestige and preservation. The village of Old Bennington is surrounded by lush green mountainsides, waterfalls, and hiking trails. Situated on the most historic avenue in Vermont, the Old Academy was constructed in 1821 to be “the finest building in the state.” According to the National Register of Historic Places, it is also one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the area. The Old Academy served as a private school, public school, and later, the Bennington public library. Famed Vermont artist, Warren Kimble, featured the Old Academy in a painting that has been included in his books and calendars. In the 1990s, the building was completely restored and converted to residential use. The house is on city water and has propane heat. It has forced-air heat and air conditioning, separate electronic dampers between floors, two working fireplaces, crown moldings, recessed lighting on dimmers, electronic air filtration, a full basement, and a third- floor loft with bedroom and sitting areas and a thermostatically- controlled whole-house fan.
