Stay in one of Waco's historic treasures featured in Historic Homes of Waco, Texas. This 5 bed, 3.5 bath house can easily sleep 12 people. With the back deck and huge yard, there are multiple places to entertain. There are 2 full kitchens downstairs and a kitchenette upstairs to compliment the master suite. This property is perfect for a great getaway with family and friends. We are just a few minutes walk from Magnolia Silos and a short drive to Baylor University. The Conner House is featured in the book- Historic Homes of Waco, Texas. The house was built by Dr George Conner, a prominent African-American physician, and his wife Jeffie, the superintendent of black schools in the county. One of the first guests that was welcomed into the home was Marian Anderson, the world-renowned opera singer who would eventually become the first African-American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera. Anderson came to Waco at the invitation of Dr. A.J. Armstrong, chair of the English department at Baylor, and Waco, being “a city in the American South in 1939,” didn’t have a hotel room available for her. Armstrong contacted J. Newton Jenkins, pastor of New Hope Church, asking for help in finding a nice room for Anderson during her trip to Waco, and Jenkins arranged for Anderson to stay at the Conner house. Later that year, Anderson made history by performing at the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington D.C., before a crowd of 75,000.
