Built in the 1850s to resemble a steamboat, our Creole Bateau des Briques is conveniently located just 1 1/2 blocks off of St. Charles Avenue in Uptown New Orleans. The construction of the house spanned decades, with remnants dating to the 1830s. It's a unique property in our area, and rarer still to have so many original details intact.
Although our house is historic, it is by no means trapped in amber. We enjoy a mix of old and new and pay homage to its long line of storied inhabitants with treasured objects and art. Oddly enough, the father of a close friend of ours live here 100 years ago, along with his sisters and pet goat!
The entrance to the apartment is along the side of the house at the end of a cobblestone path. The floor plan is a sequence of rooms without hallways. The entrance is halfway towards the back of the house, which is typical of Creole architecture, and provides good separation between living spaces in lieu of hallways.
The front part of the house is made of wide plaster-coated brick walls with remnants of original coats of paint for an authentic patina. The dining room is in the very front, and its large table doubles as a generous work space in view of a Smart TV. The parlor contains ample seating and beautiful filtered light. Ceilings soar overhead at 13’ and are surrounded by original cornice mouldings and ceiling medallions with fish and pomegranate motifs. The front bedroom follows, with the entryway and main bathroom next in line.
At this point, the house's structure changes to wood, and the ceiling is slightly lower at 11 1/2’. The large kitchen is clad in original beaded-board walls, as is the back bedroom. The second bathroom is at the very end of the house.
Our house is a continual work in progress, and I’m grateful to have it as my pet project. Do know that some things have been allow to age, others have been made new, while the remainder will be tended to, as able. Work has been focused on the interior areas lately, and attention is turning to outdoor spaces and exterior painting next.
As this is a quiet, family-oriented neighborhood, quiet hours must be maintained after 10 pm. No smoking is allowed anywhere on the property.
