Fort Garland House | Rocky Mountains Solar-Powered Country Home near Great Sand Dunes National Park

3 Bedroom House in Fort Garland

Southern Colorado is cool in summer, sunny all winter! Great fishing in Mountain Home Lake, hike and bike miles of back country trails, explore the Great Sand Dunes, climb our 14,345 ft Mount Blanca, relax in nearby hot springs, visit galleries and historic Spanish colonial villages in the San Luis Valley of Colorado's spectacular southern Rockies. Bring your binoculars for waterbirds and wildlife, and your telescope for our designated Dark-Night skies.
Surrounded by books and our eclectic art, we invite you to enjoy all the welcoming charms of a real home - all yours to enjoy in complete privacy as a quiet retreat or as your base for adventures far and wide.
Come see how it feels to live in a green way! The simple luxuries of EarthNest Cottage have proven since 2015 that off-the-grid solar-powered living is not only do-able but it just plain feels good - all the comforts of home, comfy and enjoyable, while learning to do no harm to our planet.
CAUTION - It's a bit wild out here, so it's not for the physically challenged or folks with trouble breathing, as this 3-level House is at 8,300 ft altitude and has stairs to climb. We hope to become more accessible soon, but meanwhile, the downstairs has its own kitchen, beautiful bathroom, and sunroom, with direct access to the two flagstone terraces, BBQ grill, and patio. This makes it easy for grandma and grandpa to have their own private space while still all being together.
We especially welcome those who love the arts, live music, history, and all the lessons to be learned from nature. Wildlife and waterfowl are plentiful at Mountain Home State Wildlife Area - a photographer’s haven, with the peaks of Mount Blanca against our always blue skies. Here you'll see geese, ducks, deer, elk, eagles, and the spectacular migrations of Sandhill Cranes. The lake is regularly stocked with trout, for great fishing, and all of this is just a bike ride away.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park is a half hour drive from here, with Zapata Falls and luxurious natural hot springs along the way.
The restored civil war fortress of Fort Garland Museum is excellent, giving you the touch and feel of America's Old West - the arrival of the railroad, and the pioneer settlers who came to make their fortunes in cattle, railroads and gold.
Just a few minutes away from EarthNest Cottage, you'll find some nice family-owned restaurants, including fine Italian fare, barbecue, and great Mexican food. The conveniences of gas, groceries, and a well stocked hardware store are also nearby.
We invite you to browse our library and enjoy the big stone fireplace, guarded by our hearth's mahogany lion.
On the main level, the 400 sq ft sunset-facing dining room has polished pine flooring and seven windows overlooking the spectacular views of Mount Blanca, Mountain Home Lake, and the vast reaches of the Valley's mesas, rimmed by the San Juans on the far horizon. The handsome custom-built distressed-wood table and leather chairs hold six (or eight) for dinner, and there are plenty of colorful plates and table settings available for your family feast.
Fast Internet and WiFi and Roku media are free, but we choose not to have TV. We are proud to be remote and quiet, yet accessible by well-kept country roads.
This solar powered country home comes as a whole package, but if you wish, for added privacy, there are two independent living areas, each with its own entrance, kitchen, and bathroom. This gives nice options for privacy.
Downstairs, you have a queen-sized Tempurpedic bed and a single lofted bed. For starlight sleeping, the sunroom's single couch adds a fourth sleeper on the downstairs level.
You’ll be amazed by the "forest-grove" downstairs bathroom. What an illusion! The gorgeous copper and brushed-nickel tub and the slab of mahogany vanity are surrounded by massive oak trees, captured by the murals' photographer. Check out our photos!
With all electric and electronic comforts being solar powered and off the grid, we are thermostat heated and have plenty of hot water. Our 300 foot well, tested every two years, produces water ten times more pure than the best city water anywhere in the US.
The open architecture of the main living area, with its high vaulted ceiling and overlooking loft provides lots of natural light, and the big rock fireplace is great for snuggling up or for sharing a toddy with your loved one. A nice wood stove on each floor, backed up by our thermostat heating system, means constant comfort and warmth. Yes, in winter, you can chop and carry in some firewood from the woodpile, but you don’t have to. It's fairly cool in summer with a good breeze and clear skies. Winters are always blue-sky pleasant, with sweet, clean air and starry nights.
The main level kitchen has a new fridge and stove, with all you need for cooking. You'll wash dishes the old-fashioned way, by hand.
Instead of TV, we offer a nice flat screen monitor. You can hook up your own ROKU for Netflix and such, or you can plug in your own music and games. If you're not outside most of the time, which is easy to do here, you'll have an excellent library to browse.
This is not a Martha Stewart home, and it's not at all like a hotel. The character of the house is eclectic, exuberant, colorful, worldly, and somewhat whimsical. You'll enjoy the company of the great mahogany lion who just sits there on the hearth, protective and gentle.
The bathroom on this level is Tahitian, with a Gauguin print, a Talavera ceramic washbasin, and a very nice claw-foot tub and shower right next to the window. You'll see passing deer and maybe a herd of elk as you bathe.
Overlooking the living room, behind a handsome ship-white railing, is the Loft, the sunny third level dormer with a brass double bed, a good reading light, and a ceiling fan The big bay window gives you a "penthouse" view of the foothills, and nice with cross ventilation of clean mountain air.
Total sleeping capacity looks like this: two couples, two singles, for a total of six in beds. Two couches make eight, and a folding cot is available if needed. Window-cushions provide additional bunking for kids if needed.
The surrounding country roads and open spaces are great for bike and ATV exploring, and there’s lots of parking and room for tents, camping, bikes, and whatever toys you bring.
