Les Chenes is the restored, original farmhouse of a rural longere in a hamlet near La Fontenelle and about a kilometre from the market town of Antrain near the Normandy/Brittany border. The location is peaceful but within easy reach of all amenities. It is a wonderful sight seeing area and base, being near the walled city and beaches of St Malo, Dinard, medieval Dinan on the River Rance, Mont St Michel, Fougeres with the largest medieval castle in Europe, the oyster port of Cancale and the shops and markets of Rennes. The leisure area of the Foret de Villecartier with walks, lake, treetop assault course, boats, cafe/bar and pony rides is 1km away. There are wonderful walks in the quieter parts of the foret. The Etang de Boulet only 15 minutes away has a lovely lakeside beach with boating and café. Fougeres boasts a swimming pool complex with slides and whirlpools; 10 pin bowling is available at Dol de Bretagne a few km away.
There are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two singles, and a family bathroom with over bath shower. Downstairs is remarkably spacious; there is a large living room/kitchen with all fitted appliances, a fireplace and lounge seating as well as a large separate salon with a granite fireplace and wood burner. We can provide wood for the fireplaces in winter, but please be aware that owing to the size of the salon and its high ceiling and open aspect it is difficult to heat in very cold weather. This large room is overlooked from the 1st floor by a gallery and landing. The kitchen/living area is very cosy all year with the fireplace and 2 radiators. Both these reception rooms have tv, which is available in French and English. Outside the large enclosed garden at the back is an ideal recreation area; at the back of the house is a granite terrace with barbecue and outside furniture whilst at the far end of the garden another raised terrace is shaded by an oak tree and is a lovely place to sit in peace with a glass of wine!
The house is child friendly and a travel cot, stair gate and high chair are available for small children.
Free fibre wifi is available throughout.
At the front of the property there is secure private parking.
Although the house is secluded, the village of La Fontenelle with a lovely bar/restaurant/boulangerie is within walking distance, and the town of Antrain is only 1 km away. Here there is a supermarket, pharmacies, banks, boulangeries, newsagents, bars and other shops. Opposite the bar in La Fontenelle is a public tennis court.
There are plenty of family friendly activities in the area. Try the nearby theme park, Cobac Parc at Lanhelin, the Grand Aquarium at St. Malo, and Alligator Bay at Pontorson only 10 km away, an amazing collection of reptiles. There are several chateaux in the region; try the chateau de la Rouerie for a castle with wildlife park only 4 km away, and chateau de La Ballue for a castle with exceptional gardens only 2 km away. It also has regular concerts and cultural events. Chateau de Bonnefontaine is in Antrain 1km away.
It is a great area for cycling with the disused railway to Fougeres now turned into a cycle/ pedestrian pathway.
