HISTORY
From the Mid-Victorian era, ‘Peppercorn Cottage’ was established in circa 1849 during the time of the gold rush in Bathurst. Morrisset Street was known to be a hub for Chinese markets and gardens. The first colonised owner of the land was a former convict named Joseph Fawcett. Joseph and his brother Thomas, were sent to Australia on ‘The John’ from England for theft. He was assigned to the former explorer and Commander of the Penal Colony, William Lawson, to build infrastructure and cultivate land around Bathurst. It is documented that the land was owned by the sovereign, Queen Victoria. Once Joseph had served his time as a convict, in order to start his life in Australia, the Sovereign sold a parcel of land to him. As Joseph didn’t acquire any money or asset, the land was sold for the sum of a peppercorn, to start his new life as a free man. This land is what we now know as Peppercorn Cottage.
There are a number of unique features throughout the house. The fireplace is original, Bathurst brick. The bricks around the outside of the property are original and what is known as ‘Convict bricks’ – each shape is unique to the convict that made the brick. The coloured fan-window above the door was an original feature, uncovered during a renovation in the 80’s.
The current owners acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which the home sits, the Wiradjuri people.
