Situated in the quiet village of Portinscale and within walking distance of the shores of Derwentwater and just over a mile from the market town of Keswick, Oakdene, is a homely terrace cottage, ideally suited for those visit the Lake District with their four legged friends and who love the great outdoors. The cottage is presented with a large open plan living space which is made up of a cosy sitting area and a spacious kitchen and dining area that benefit from conservatory style windows that overlook the cottage garden and open to a large, covered, patio. The bedrooms are presented as two double bedrooms which are complemented by a family bathroom. Oakdene House offers easy access to the stunning scenery of the north western Lake District with the breath taking scenery of the beautiful Buttermere Valley a simple 15 minute drive away. It is also in easy reach of Bassenthwaite Lake (home to a family of Ospreys). For those wanting to enjoy the great outdoors there are numerous walks from the village around Borrowdale, from gentle walks through the valley to the high fells of Grizedale Pike and the Coledale Horseshoe. Those seeking thrills on two wheels will enjoy the award winning Altura Trails in Whinlatter Forest just to the north of the village. Within 5 minutes walk are two Marinas with numerous water sports on offer. == Accommodation in detail Oakdene is located in a line of terrace cottages that stand in the center of the village of Portinscale. The front door opens to a hallway which in turn leads to the welcoming and homely heart of the house with its spacious living area. The cosy sitting area is comfortably furnished with sofa and armchairs which are arranged around the snug log burning stove and TV, the bright and airy kitchen/dinner with large picture windows allowing the light to flood in and offering a lovely outlook onto the garden. Patio doors open onto a large, covered, patio and slate topped outdoor dining table. The farmhouse style dining table is just the place to gather over a hearty breakfast in the morning or relax over dinner in the evening. The handmade oak kitchen is finished with incredible slate work tops and the kitchen is equipped with a range cooker offering a five ring gas hob and double oven, under counter fridge, freezer and washing machine. A large Belfast sink overlooks the garden (please note that there is no dishwasher). Upstairs, choose from one of two double bedrooms, both over looking the garden. The family house bathroom offers a large bath with shower over, basin and WC. Returning to the ground floor there is a convenient cloakroom WC. To the rear of Oakdene there is lovely lawned cottage garden, with well planted borders and well stocked with fresh herbs. The garden is enclosed and contains a wildlife pond but the owners respectfully draw guest’s attention to the fact that this makes the property unsuitable for children under 12 years. A covered patio with bench seating is just the spot to relax with a drink and the slate topped outdoor dining table is ideal for alfresco dining. The owners welcome up to two well behaved dogs The owners request that they stay downstairs. Private parking is available for two cars; one outside the front door and one by the back gate at the end of the garden. Location The village of Portinscale makes an ideal base from which to explore. With footpaths heading off in every direction there is something for everyone. The popular Derwentwater Marina is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the cottage and from here the regular Keswick launch offers regular services around the lake and from here canoes and dinghies can be hired. In the welcome and information pack in the houses good places to eat are suggested. The Chalet Tea room is just by the back gate the nearby the Walled Garden at Lingholme, just a fifteen minute walk from the cottage, these are ideal for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon teas. The nearby market town of Keswick is one of the Lake District’s most popular destinations. This friendly town hosts the very popular twice weekly market that has recently won the coveted “Best Outdoor Market” in the Great British Market Awards. Keswick also offers a fantastic array of shops offering everything from craft bakeries and local produce, antiques, crafts, outdoor clothing and much, much more. If you are looking for somewhere to eat and drink, a week just won’t be long enough to sample the great range of pubs, restaurants, bistros, cafes and wine bars! For a great evening out why not visit the 100 year old Alhambra offering first class cinema entertainment in traditional surroundings or enjoy an evening at “the most beautiful and friendly theatre in Britain”, the 400 seat Theatre By The Lake on the shores of Derwentwater. Enjoy a cruise on Derwentwater, walk onto the fells; - Cat Bells, Skiddaw, Coledale Horeshoe and Blencathra are all nearby; head underground at Honister Slate Mines or take the Via Ferrata challenge; enjoy mountain biking or follow the walking trails and Go Ape in Whinlatter Forest. For steam train enthusiasts there is the little train at Threlkeld Mining museum or the L’al Ratty which heads up into the hills from Ravenglass on the West Coast. For day trips throughout the Lake District Ullswater is a short drive away offering lake cruises, great walking and the beautiful Aira Force Waterfall; Buttermere and Crummock Water offer sublime scenery; Ashness Bridge and Surprise View, situated above the Borrowdale Valley, should not be missed and perhaps even a cup of tea and homemade cake in the unspoilt village of Watendlath.
