"Everyone had to have a great pride, a great pride, a high sense of himself, of himself as individuals and of himself as a community, if immediately after the earthquake they wanted and were able to miraculously reconstruct those cities, with those topographies, with those baroque architectures: spectacular, daring, dazzling concretizations of dreams, realizations of fantastic utopias. » Vincenzo Consolo, essayist
Noto is a small jewel of the Sicilian baroque. A splendid town perched on a plateau overlooking the Asinaro valley.
An important Sicilian, Roman, Byzantine and then Arab center, it was destroyed in full splendor by the 1693 earthquake, but thanks to the skilful reconstruction, Noto has become a magnificent city of art, a Unesco heritage together with Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica , Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli.
The extraordinary beauty of Noto, and of the other cities rebuilt after the earthquake, characterizes the whole Val di Noto. Great architects were called for the reconstruction, almost all trained in Rome and in fact the motive of inspiration is that of the Roman Baroque, albeit revisited. The result exceeded expectations and the reconstruction gave birth to a wonderful but different work from city to city: from the dark gray baroque of Catania, where lava stone was used, to the bright architectures of Noto with a honey-colored tint.
The medieval city, of which traces of the walls and the castle are visible, corresponds to the ancient Neto. The layout of the new city is instead the Baroque one, based on wide and straight streets interspersed with squares with stairways overlooked by churches and palaces.
Three main squares, Piazza dell'Immacolata with the homonymous church; then there is the town hall square surrounded by four buildings: the town hall, the church of the Santissimo Salvatore (1791-1801), the bishop's palace and the splendid cathedral of San Nicolò (1771), which dominates from above scenic staircase. In the piazza XVI Maggio there is the church of S. Domenico (1727), with a curved facade, and the Dominican convent with a beautiful rusticated portal. In the church of the Crucifix the statue of the Madonna della Neve is preserved, sculpted by the sculptor Francesco Laurana in 1471.
In addition to Noto and the other beautiful baroque cities, for lovers of ancient civilizations, do not miss, perhaps on hot spring days, a trip to the surrounding areas where archaeological sites of great value are preserved: from the Greek cities of Eloro and Camarina to Greek theater of Palazzolo Acreide; from the Necropolis of Pantalica, also a UNESCO site, to the prehistoric village of Castelluccio, up to the Roman villa of Tellaro.
Noto is a perfect place to visit at any time of the year: in summer, where you can combine cultural visits with trips to the beautiful Sicilian sea, in autumn and winter, perhaps along the Val di Noto wine route which it winds among six municipalities of South Eastern Sicily, such as Palazzolo, Avola, Noto, Rosolini, Pachino and Ispica.
Curiosity
Anciently called Neas by the Sicilians, Neaton by the Greeks and Netum by the Romans, it was the Arabs who gave it the definitive name of Noto. The term which in Arabic has the same meaning as in Italian, wanted to be a tribute to the beauty and importance of the city.
