The Sunshine Cottage has a porch across the front with a swing for relaxing in the shade of the big oak trees. The tin roof is wonderful when it rains, because there is nothing as pleasant as the sound of rain on a tin roof! The north bedroom has a working fireplace on the north wall, flanked by two windows. This bedroom has a full extra long bed with an antique iron bedstead, a shabby chic chest of drawers and drop leaf table. Lace curtains cover the windows to filter the sunlight and the pull down shades protect your privacy. The high bead board ceilings are the restored original. A closet is provided for your clothes in the dressing room. It is furnished with an antique wicker dressing table, stool and mirror. The overhead lighting is in addition to the lights over the mirror. From the dining room window you have a view of a peaceful, secluded park like area that borders the Nueces river. Wallpaper adds to the homey cottage feeling of the dining room and kitchen. A picnic basket is available for lunch at the picnic area on the Nueces River bank, which is just a short walk from the back porch of the Sunshine Cottage. The kitchen is furnished with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishes, utensils, pots and pans are provided. The south bedroom has a nice size closet and a full extra long bed. It features an antique iron bedstead, a shabby chic dresser and other special features. A sofa sleeper in the living area completes the available beds. The Sunshine Cottage sleeps up to five people. Take a family vacation in the beautiful Nueces Canyon and discover a refreshingly unspoiled part of the Texas Hill Country that has been referred to as “the best kept secret in Texas.” Mill Wheel on the Nueces has been a favorite spot to swim from the early 1920’s. Over this deep hole of water on the bank of the river are huge oak trees, picnic tables and a patio with stone steps leading to the water’s edge. This is a beautiful private piece of property for our guests to relax and watch the evening sun as it disappears behind the hills. The River House is just South of the Mill Wheel swimming hole on the bank of the river. The Sunshine Cottage and the Lodge are located on the front part of the property just a short walk away. The Quilter’s Cottage lies about midway from the front part of the property and the river. They are all situated on about 20 acres of land just at the edge of Camp Wood giving you plenty of space to roam about and yet close enough to walk to everything. With the wildflowers abloom, the abundant wildlife, the birds and butterflies and fireflies flittering by, this is a beautiful, wonderful, peaceful and relaxing place in God’s creation to make some memories and treat yourself to a time of refreshing in your life. Nueces Canyon is just over the mountain from Leakey and Con Can in the Frio Canyon. Garner State Park and Lost Maples National Park are located nearby. Uvalde is 40 miles from Camp Wood and Cuidad Acuna, Mexico 80 miles. Lake Nueces and Cooksey Park are four miles South of Camp Wood on Highway 55, and Sonora Caverns are about 80 miles North. Nueces Canyon is made up of four little towns, Camp Wood, Barksdale, Vance & Montell, which are located in three counties, Real, Edwards and Uvalde. Over the years people have come here and gone back home owning a little slice of heaven on earth. This is truly God’s Country!
