Cuchara House | Luxury Home, Family Groups, Nat’l Forest, Hot Tub, 2 Master Suites, Mtn Views

4 Bedroom House in Cuchara, La Veta

This luxury home features beautiful mountain views on 50 private acres bordering thousands of acres of the San Isabel National Forest, with no neighbors in sight. It feels like the most remote of locations, but it is just minutes away from the tiny mountain town of Cuchara, and only 18 minutes to the small town of La Veta, with plentiful outdoor attractions throughout the year.
The layout of this home is perfect for multi-family groups, as each bedroom has its own en suite bathroom, and the second master suite can be converted into a bunk room, depending on your needs. Get the kids outside to play on the acreage, zip line, trampoline, ropes course, or hot tub, or explore hiking on the property and discover an old wood teepee and small aspen glade nestled next to a mountain stream. Beautiful unique large boulders on the property are fun for adult-supervised climbing adventures.
Inside, enjoy the touch of refined décor that makes the home a pleasure to relax in.
The home features honed quartz counters throughout the house, with marble floor bathrooms, along with hardwood floors and natural wood cabinets, giving the home a warm yet sophisticated feel. Mid-century modern furnishings are elegant yet comfortable. Original artwork, much from local Colorado artists, accents the décor. You can enjoy this beautiful home and surroundings in comfort.
The kitchen is an entertainer's dream. With Viking appliances, dual ovens, a stove top with 6 burners plus a griddle, commercial hood, and two dishwashers to clean up afterwards, you will feel like a professional chef. The kitchen has an open layout with the dining room, with countertop seating for four, plus a 12' dining room table that seats 12 people, so you have plenty of room for your group.
The main floor master bedroom suite features a stunning view of the mountains. Sit in the custom swivel recliners to enjoy the full panoramic view while sipping your coffee. The master bathroom suite is like your own private spa, with a large Caribbean marble shower with two shower heads, and a private relax room with a freestanding bath tub with chandelier and quartz wall, so you can lock everyone else out (moms will know why having a private spa room with a locking door is so special!).
The second master suite is on the second floor. It has a King bed, plus two additional twin beds, its own living room area with a couch and TV, an en suite bathroom with shower, plus a small private upper deck that looks out on the San Isabel National Forest. This is a great suite for a family with young children, as they can stay in the same room with parents, and if they wake up early, they have their own living room where they can play without waking up others :) This area can also double as a playroom, with a foosball table.
Another option, if you have more than 12 guests, is to extend sleeping space into the loft area right before you enter the second master suite, where four additional twin mattresses can be laid on the floor for extra sleeping space, and the loft has its own full bathroom. (If this is desired, please let us know, so we can provide extra linens for these beds.)
There are also two other guest rooms on the main floor. Each guest room has an en suite full bathroom, with a bathtub/shower combo. Guest Suite 1 has a King bed. Guest Suite 2 has two queen beds, with firm comfort cooling mattresses.
The main floor deck is accessible from the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom. There is almost as much deck space as space inside. Enjoy meals outside with the outdoor dining table that seats eight people. Lounge on the couch or recliners to enjoy the mountain views.
LOCAL ACTIVITIES
The small towns of Cuchara and La Veta host many fun activities over the summer. There are several great restaurants and an amazing bakery. Check out this page for up to date info on local events: https://www.discoverbachman.com/community-calendar/ and here for restaurants in the surrounding areas: https://www.discoverbachman.com/restaurant-list/
Cuchara Mountain Park is just a ten minute drive from the house. The park offers hiking and biking trails, and disc golf in the summer. In the winter, they have groomed trails for cross county skiers. Plus, they are currently in the process of opening one ski lift for access to a few of the lower slopes. This will be a small ski area, but is absolutely perfect for families learning to ski. Slopes soon to be available shown here: https://www.skiingcuchara.org/mountain (Exact opening date is TBD.)
Bear Lake and Blue Lake access roads are just a ten minute drive away. They feature lake and stream fishing, plus 23 miles of motorized trails available for ATV, motorcycle, bicycle, foot, and horse use.
The Wahatoya Lakes State Wildlife Area—one mile east of La Veta on Bear Creek Road—offers the perfect respite for fishing, picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, and non-motorized boating. https://spanishpeakscountry.com/wahatoya-lakes-state-wildlife-area/
Colorado’s first state park, Lathrop State Park, is just a thirty minute drive. It features two lakes and nearly 1,600 acres of recreational land nestled among the pinyons and junipers of the Spanish Peaks’ foothills. Martin Lake offers water skiing, power, and sail boating. It’s also a warm-water lake, making it great for swimming. Horseshoe Lake is a peaceful haven for canoeists, kayakers, and other wakeless boaters. Catfish, bass, walleye, trout, and bluegill thrive in both lakes, although Horseshoe Lake is known for its large tiger muskies. Lathrop State Park’s Hogback Nature Trail is one of the area’s most popular hiking trails. And when visitors are done with their hike, they’ll often relax on the park’s beach or let their kids play on the playground.
DIRT ROAD ACCESS TO HOUSE
You will be traveling on paved roads and using the Highway of Legends, until about a half mile from the home. You will then turn onto dirt roads that are maintained by the county year round. The condition of these roads is passable in all seasons (we have lived in this home year-round), but it can be challenging at times. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended in the spring & summer due to snow-melt runoff that causes muddy conditions and ruts, and a 4x4 vehicle is required in the fall & winter, due to snow and possible ice conditions. Only 3 days of the over 120 days of winter conditions in 2020/21 required tire chains in addition to 4x4 in order to access the house, but it is something to be prepared for when visiting in the winter. All vehicles in CO are recommended to carry tire chains when traveling, for safety.
WILDLIFE
You will often see abundant wildlife on the property, including mule deer, elk, turkey, and fox squirrels. In the spring and summer, the humming birds are plentiful. There are also black bears in the area, however they are rarely seen. (Please never leave food or trash outside, as it will attract bears, and bears that become a nuisance have to be put down.) Hunting is not permitted on the private property, even with a tag. Game cameras throughout the property are recording. However, hunters can access the San Isabel National Forest to hunt, walking directly from the house to the forest about 100 yards from the house. Proper hunting licenses and tags are required.
CLIMATE CONTROL
The house does not have air conditioning, as the average temperature in the summer is around 75 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night. Screen doors and fans are used to keep the house a comfortable temperature on warmer days. In the winter, the radiant flooring heat provides a comfortable environment.
EVENTS/GUEST COUNT
Events with groups over 16 people are not permitted. The total guest count on site at any time must remain at 16 people or under. For groups with 12-16 guests, up to four additional twin mattresses will be provided, and there is an additional guest fee for each guests #13-16 that covers this.
SMOKING/FIRES
We know it is Colorado, and a lot of people enjoy... smoking... when they come to visit. However, there is no smoking of any kind allowed in the home. If you smoke anything outside, make sure you dispose of any trash properly. Any evidence of smoking or fires outside will be a fine, as this area is a fire zone, and even a small ember could threaten the beauty and safety of this forest.
PET RULES
Pets are welcome, but there are restrictions. Pets are not allowed on indoor or outdoor furniture. They are not allowed to be left inside or outside the house unattended, so when guests are out of the house, they need to be put in the 10,000 sq fenced-in outdoor area. (There are houseplants within reach of pets that would not be healthy for them to chew on.)
CHILDREN
This house is great for children over the age six, but it is not set up with childproofing for children under that age. Low cabinets contain cleaning supplies that are not locked up. Young children are welcome, but they will require additional supervision to keep safe.
WINTER OUTDOOR FURNITURE
The snow is beautiful in the winter! The firepit will be available for use, but the outdoor furniture is covered to protect it from the snow and ice. If you uncover it to use it, you need to recover it immediately after use, to keep the snow and ice off it. There is a snow melt mat from the house to the hot tub, so that you can still access the hot tub even when it is cold (but watch out for ice.)
END OF STAY CLEANING
Guests are responsible for returning all furniture and items to their original locations. Strip linens off beds, and bring linens and towels to laundry room. If griddle on stove is used by guests, it needs to be cleaned by guests. Dirty dishes put in dishwasher and started. If fireplaces or firepits are used, ashes need to be removed and put into the metal bucket provided for this. Guests need to place trash in the dumpster during and at the end of their stay.
