Summary:
Only 10 minutes from the Hobart CBD and the University, this architect-designed and meticulously renovated retreat sits on 3.5 acres of bush with great views of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. With generous spaces throughout, the home offers modern open-plan living on two levels, master bedroom, optional sofa bed in the living space, study nook, WiFi, bathroom, laundry and parking.
Light filled and warm in winter, Outside The Box is a wonderful, peaceful location to call home when visiting Hobart.
The Space:
The property is on two levels and includes exclusive use of a balcony, small lawn area and native-plant rockery along with access to the surrounding bushland and tennis court. The garden area immediately below the balcony is for your private use, but you are welcome to say hello to the chooks or wander through the vegetable garden beds and greenhouses. Please just make sure to close any gates and doors: we have invested heavily in keeping the many wonderful native animals out of the veggie gardens!
All our linen is supplied by our linen service, is of high quality, so you can be confident of a comfortable nights sleep.
Guest Access:
Guests have full use of the house during their visit. The bathroom and laundry are on the lower level and are accessed by a set of stairs.
The Neighborhood:
The house is located in a beautiful bush setting, with native animals and birds that are regular and welcome visitors to the property. For us humans we of course have some local places to find our food and coffee.
The Mt Nelson Store is back down on Nelson Road about 1km and is
open 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 6.30pm Saturday and
7.30am to 6.30pm Sunday. It has all the basics but for more specialised
grocery products you will need to forage further afield.
SUPERMARKETS
We have the two big supermarket chains close by in Sandy Bay, but a
couple of the slightly more independent ones with good choices are:
Hill Street Grocer
South Hobart, 362 Macquarie St (turn left at the second set of lights
at the bottom of the Southern Outlet when going into town).
Salamanca Fresh
190 Davey Street (coming out of town just before you turn onto the
Southern Outlet)
Getting Around:
It's preferable to have a vehicle if you intend to explore Southern Tasmania however if you are just wanting to explore Hobart then the 457/458 bus takes you to the centre of town and is fun ride as most of them go down ‘the bends’, which is both a visual delight and an exhilarating experience, especially when another bus is coming up!
The 457 route takes you past the University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay Campus and into the centre of town, disembarking at Franklin Square area. From the Square it is a 5 minute walk to Brooke Street Pier where you can catch the regular ferry or bus service to MONA.
Other Things to Note:
There are three separate and independent residences off the driveway. This will not impact your stay other than you may come across the other occupants of these homes who are welcoming and helpful. You are also welcome to wander around our bush down below the tennis court, just be aware that we have bee hives so take care to avoid their flight paths in the front of the hives. Please also respect the privacy of the other homes. If you would like to use the tennis court, please send us a message and we will let you know where the racquets and balls are. We have established a non-profit association, Outside the Box - Earth Arts Rights Inc, to help further these aims, both within our own lifetimes, and beyond. Our long-term dream is to secure this property in perpetuity so people can continue to explore and promote ways to act fairly, tread lightly and live creatively.
