"Light on the Mayo" is a newly built, finely appointed, 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom cottage located across the road from the famous "Mayo Beach" in Wellfleet Bay. It is being offered to rent for first time FEB 2020. The cottage was built in 2018 and is incredibly cozy with unobstructed views of Mayo Beach and Wellfleet Harbor. It also has excellent privacy and high-end amenities. The house includes central heat and air conditioning in each bedroom as well as the living room. It has a modern kitchen with a beautiful dining nook, including a gorgeous hand-made table from Wellfleet’s own Jeff Soderbergh. Off the kitchen and nook is a cozy living room with a working fireplace and television. Each bedroom includes luxurious queen beds with great light and large dressers and closets for storage. The bathroom has an over-sized shower with beautiful stone tiling. There is an outdoor shower with privacy screens and a picnic table in the front yard for outdoor lunch. Light on the Mayo is located on Kendrick Avenue, which has access to one of the preferred swim beaches on the Outer Cape. The beach is sandy and soft on the feet with gradual entry, making for a perfect beach experience for the littlest children. The water is often 10 degrees warmer than other Cape locations because it is in the shallow bay. The bay location also makes the water calm without waves which is good for sailing, paddle boarding, and kayaking. Besides the beach there is much to do in and around Light on the Mayo! We are located a short walk from the town tennis courts, basketball courts, a large playground, and community center where live music is frequently played during summer months. The Wellfleet Playhouse is also right there with great live entertainment and regular shows for children. The town pier, which offers on-beach seafood, sandwiches, and ice cream as well as family square dancing lessons, is a short walk down the beach or road. It is also a fun spot to watch the boats and fishermen unload their catch and you can even take deep sea fishing tours or excursions from there. Two really great food options, the Bookstore for its fresh and famous Wellfleet oysters, and the Pearl with terrific seafood and even better views of the harbor from its 2nd story outdoor deck, are also just a short walk away from the cottage. If you haven't been to Wellfleet before you will want to... ...visit downtown. It is about 2 miles from our house and is friendly and small while still offering an impressive array of art galleries, shops, and restaurants including gourmet dining at the Pearl, Mac’s Shack, Wicked Oyster, and the family-friendly Winslow’s Tavern. Don't forget to pick up local veggies and fresh fish from Hatch’s Fish market while you're there! A weekly farmer’s market showcases fresh fruits and vegetables and local seafood and crafts. ...hike Great Island. The uninhabited peninsula known as Great Island is a treasure of untouched natural beauty complete with the foundations of a real old pirate tavern. You can sail or paddle to the island and even walk there across the flats (if you dare) during low tide. It is also a great bike ride from our cottage and "yes" it connects via road so you can drive to the trailhead too! ...tour the famous Wellfleet oyster farms. At low tide you can't swim in Wellfleet bay so it’s a great time to explore the tidal flats or to visit any of Wellfleet’s several pristine kettle ponds or go to the beach on the oceanside. On the flats, be sure to stop by the farmers working their oysterbeds. They never mind showing off their goods, and it is a treat for kids to see spider crabs, live scallops, etc. ...dinner at Mac’s Shack. Craft cocktails, great seafood, and good vibes. Mac, the owner of several restaurants in Cape Cod, is committed to supporting his local community as well as the freshest and most sustainable seafood options. Mac’s Shack is always a stop for us for lobster and sushi. Plus, they do takeout! ...lunch at the original Box Lunch for delicious, freshly-made pita bread wrap sandwiches. Wild Turkey with hots for mom and dad, and a Cheese Dream, Porkeys Nightmare with extra durkees, and PBJ for the kids. The Box Lunch is a staple of Wellfleet and has been rolling out their roll-up sandwiches since the 70s.
