HISTORY OF THE ISLAND
Located on Florida’s Southwest Gulf Cost of Mexico is the Paradise Island of Upper Captiva Island.
Upper Captiva Island is also called North Captiva Island and is located north of Captiva Island and south Cayo Costa Island.
Calusa Indians first inhabited Captiva Island over 6,000 years ago up until the conquistadors arrived and nearly wiped out the tribes.
Ponce De Leon sailed these waters in the early 1500’s and famous pirates frequented the Island such as Jose’ Gaspar. The Island earned its name from the women held “captive” by the pirates for ransom.
Some believe a pirate treasure is buried on these islands, just waiting to be discovered.
A hurricane in 1921 severed Captiva Island into two separate landmasses, thus creating the island that we now know as “Upper or North Captiva Island” There are no Bridges or roads to Captiva. Access is only by boat or small aircraft.
This lush secluded barrier island is famous for its breathtaking sunsets and pristine white sandy beaches that offer true unspoiled natural beauty. A tropical island playground awaits you at upper Captiva Island, “Come enjoy the ultimate Island Experience!”
