Race Fans Welcome (Easy Loudon Access) DiPace’s “Dock of the Bay” Dock of the Bay 19 Litch Lane, Alton Bay NH 03810 Guide to the Area General Info: There is a Hannaford's grocery store 2 miles from the house. There are also 2 Walmart Superstores (Rochester and Gilford) and a Market Basket (Rochester) within 10-12 miles. Don't load your car down with a weeks worth of food. Get enough for the first day and visit the store on Sunday. Alton Bay has a number of good restaurants: Sandy Point, 1/2 mile away, has always been known for Lobsters and Prime Ribs, but it is under new owners? Not near the top of the list this year Dockside in Alton Bay is old time décor, but the food is great. Pops Clam Shell is a must to fill that great fried seafood urge. The fried Seafood platter feeds two at least. It was voted number one for Fried Clams in the State. JP China has a great Pu-Pu Platter for two. Shibley's is a little pricey, but people love their blue cheese burger. If you go grab a seat on the Pier. Johnson’s Seafood & Steak on rte 11, 3 miles east of alton is a great family restaraunt and is reasonably priced. They can handle a larger crowd with a big variety of dishes. Their sundaes are a two meal quest. They also offer 2 for one Haddock Dinners during the week. Outside of Alton there is: Meredith: Harts Turkey Farm is a destination by itself. A must do Family Turkey place. Down the street is Kellerhaus Ice Cream buffet. Homemade ice cream, in large quantities, at a reasonable price. Wednesday is dollar a scoop cone day, everyday is make your own Sundae. Also in Meredith and reachable by boat are two great places, Guiseppie's Pizzeria & Ristorante and Town Docks. Outside dining at Guiseppie's with the waterfall misting you on a hot day brings the food to life. “Town Docks” has the best” Lobster Roll” in the area (they are the benchmark that we still compare all others to). Gilford: right on rte 3 in Gilford on the Alton line, and reachable by boat, is Ames Farm Inn. You can't beat their breakfasts! A must do early in the week so that you have time to repeat! Sawyers Dairy Bar in Gilford is a great diner and ice cream stop. Gilford also boasts Gunstock Mountain for its new Aerial Tree Top Adventure and Zip Tour. They also offer Chairlift rides and Segway tours. There are also a number of great golf courses, Pheasant Ridge & Lakeview to name a few.. Wolfeboro has the shops and is a strollers charm. It is the easiest destination from Alton Bay by boat. The Upper Deck restaraunt is a great place to view the boating scene and eat. The food is more then passable, but the atmosphere makes it worth it. It should be tried. The ”Spice Squares” at the Yum Yum Shop are worth the trip and are a favorite of ours. Browns Gift Shop is always a great destination. Reachable by boat, you can get some groceries right next to the town docks. Meredith is also a great place to stroll around. The Mill has plenty to see in their three floors of indoor stores. The Town boasts Antique shops, Book stores, Candy stores etc.. Weirs Beach can be fun for a few hours just to see a bit of Americana. You can get drawn into the pinball games and old time charm. The "Drive in Movie" is a great take on a good night. Bring some lawn chairs, a blanket and picnic basket and sit outside the car. Alton Bay has a relaxed and laid back atmosphere. The town dock has a lifeguard and kids love to mingle and jump from the dock. Mini Golf at Jay's is always a hit with the kids. Their ice creams are a good bang for the buck. There is no shortage of ice cream stores in the bay. On Saturday nights there is always a group playing at the bandstand. Locals and tourists bring lawn chairs and enjoy listening and dancing. Boating Five towns have large public docks for boaters with many surrounding amenities. Alton Bay, Wolfeboro, Meredith, Center Harbor and Weirs Beach. The areas in the southern portion of the Lake, in general, have less boating hazards then the northern areas. In the northern part a good co-pilot reading the chart and markers is invaluable. The sandbar in West Alton fills up quickly and is a boating favorite among the Marina crowd with no beach of their own. We love to picnic at Ragged Island. Head due north at the western end of Rattlesnake Island and you will cross “The Broads” and find the 4 docks on the southern side of Ragged Island. This is a hidden jewel on the Lake. It is not advised to boat into the northern side of the Island unless you have a great spotter on the bow. Hugging the shoreline in smaller boats is advisable on the weekends. It is a different lake from Sunday night to Friday. The big boats are gone and the Lake is less congested and calmer. We always enjoy a ride through the Varney Islands. It is always fun to see the sunset from the mouth of Alton Bay (Little Mark Island marks the entrance to the bay) with some cheese and crackers (a little wine helps also). Gas pumps are available in Wolfeboro, Meredith, Weirs Beach, Smith Cove etc. We find Minge Cove and Robert’s Cove are the closest and have good prices. Weirs, Meredith and Wolfeboro are favorite destinations. Boating Tips: Always bring a phone! You never know when you'll need assistance. Sea Tow and Boat US are available on the Lake. Get your bearings for north and south before you start out. The bay heads north as you exit it. The markers can more easily be remembered by Red (Hot)= South/West, Black (Cold) = North/East. Even with that it is difficult to distinguish mid channel markers from regular buoys. If you get lost, check for a numbered marker and get your bearing from that. The old fall back method is to stop and wait for a boat to pass, then follow them if they make it without problems. Day trips: Kancamagus Hwy- heading east on rte 125 and then north on rte 16 you will turn right onto the Kancamagus Hwy (aka rte 112). Stopping at the Lower Basin (about 7 miles in) it is a great place to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch atop boulders in the stream. Moving on you should stop at The Gorge (depicted above) and then Sabbaday Falls. The town of Lincoln is a great place to grab Dinner or an Ice Cream Cone. If you head south on rte 3 & 93 you will pass Harts Turkey Farm restaurant at exit 23. This trip will take 5 or 6 hours if you linger at the Lower Basin. The Fish Hatchery in New Durham is a great place for kids of all ages. It has many different pools with trout, bass etc grouped by age. Three miles west of us on rte 11, is Mt. Major with a pleasant 45 minute hike up for a spectacular view of the Lake. Hiking at Mt. Major is a great way to get a panoramic view of Lake Winnipesaukee. It is less then an hour to the top and is rated as a light to moderate climb. You can park on rte 11 west about 3 miles from the house. Gunstock Mountain Tree Top Adventure and Zip Line Tour has a great reputation for a challenge to all ages. There are so many activities you will have to read up on places like Storyland, Santa’s Village, The Flume, Lost River, Mt. Washington Cog Railway etc. Etc. We are usually on the property to help you enjoy your stay and have a Great Vacation!
