Drive north, turn off to Opua, and catch the car ferry across to historic Russell, ($11 approx. per car and driver), drive over the hill and Long Beach awaits. Sometimes surfy, sometimes flat calm, sometimes full of swimmers and visitors, and sometimes empty, three quarters along the beach you will find Godwin Cottage nestled behind a hedge. This 1950's bach is a classic, with loads of character, and no modern frills. It is well loved, warm and cosy with new wool carpet in all bedrooms and modern comfortable beds. Be aware there is no dishwasher, washing machine, tv etc. Some people love how basic the cottage is, others dont, so be sure this is the rental for you. There is room for two cars to be parked around the back. People who come here 'fall in love' with this little gem, and come again and again. A stellar location, sheltered, private and separated only by the road, from the beach. Enjoy black starry nights, the soothing sound of the sea, and fishing off the rocks at either end of the beach at dusk. Alternatively a walk over to the township and you will find some wonderful restaurants and shops, remnants of the old days with early NZ buildings and churches, Pompallier House, a bustling wharf to boat/people watch, or to fish off/ do some bombs! From the wharf you can catch a ferry over to Paihai and check out what Paihai has to offer. From here you can book to go swim with the dolphins, chartered fishing, or the famous Hole in the rock trip. Watching the sun go down with a glass of wine alfresco at the township, or from the historic Flagstaff, or sitting looking out to sea from the cottage on Long Beach, there is enough variety to keep you busy or relaxed in this uniquely varied location.
