THE COTTAGE: Love being close to raw nature in remote wilderness? Then come to 'Inner Sound' cottage, where you can unwind, relax and enjoy the peaceful and secret valley of Balachuirn on the Isle of Raasay. Get away from it all in our rural, remote and rugged landscape, which promotes physical, emotional and mental wellness, and detox and destress from fast-paced living. Inner Sound rests within the silence, seclusion and serenity of Balachuirn valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Experience Còsagach (being warm, snug, sheltered, comfortable and cosy) in our cosy cottage. When the storms rage over the treetops, there is nothing more satisfying than being curled up in front of the wood-burning stove, with a book and hot toddy (warmed whiskey) in hand, listening to the weather outside. From the tranquillity of Raasay, wonder at the beauties of the Applecross Peninsula on the Scottish mainland and be astounded at Skye’s Cuillin mountains and Trotternish Peninsula across the Sound of Raasay - without getting stressed by neighbouring Skye’s busy tourist industry. Raasay is gorgeous in all seasons: don’t miss Autumn’s golden moors, Winter’s snow-peaked mountains, Spring’s flowers (e.g. meadowsweet, bluebells and primroses), and the blooming purple heather of Summer (we had some amazing weather during recent summers!). Inner Sound cottage is ideally situated in the centre of Raasay, with good access to all parts of the island. Visit the dramatic Calum's road, the haunting ruins of Brochel Castle, the deserted and heartbreakingly sad clearance villages, tranquil Inver Beach, and the whisky distillery! Catch the low tide so you can walk to the Isle of Fladda! Climb the extinct volcano, Dun Caan! Say hello to the friendly seals at Holoman Island, be amazed at the circling birds of prey (e.g. golden eagles, sea eagles, and white-tailed eagles) soaring overhead, and watch the deer gently descend with grace and dignity onto the field opposite the cottage at dusk! If you are lucky, you might also see dolphins, porpoises, whales and sea-otters in the surrounding seas - or be surprised at the Northern Lights of the Aurora Borealis at night (the dark night sky is always amazing in clear weather)! The island is great for self-organised activities such as mountain biking and road cycling, walking, boating/sailing, kayaking, bird-watching, sealife-spotting (e.g. whales, sharks, dolphins, sea-otters, and porpoises) geology, astronomy / star-gazing (Raasay has some of the darkest skies in Europe), photography, and fishing (please bring your own equipment for such self-organised activities) - and there are a host of organised activities available at Raasay House Hotel - kayaking, coasteering, sailing, rock-climbing, gorge walking, abseiling, archery, crating and tours on land and sea (organised activities are run by the hotel, not the cottage, so you need to enquire about and book activities with the hotel separately). Raasay House Hotel also offers cycle hire, a restaurant, bistro, bar - and amazing views across the bay to the Cuillin mountains. About 3 miles away from the cottage, at Inverarish village, there is a post office and shop, while at Clachan, about 2.5 miles away, you will find a whiskey distillery and gift shop. On Friday at 1:30pm, a variety of fresh fish is sold from a van at the ferry harbour. Inner Sound is a traditional Hebridean crofting cottage that has been modernised for your comfort. It has 3 bedrooms (1 double with a cot, 1 twin, and 1 single box-room) and the living room provides futons that can sleep an additional 2 people. The living room and kitchen/diner both have log-burning stoves. Outside, you will find 2 log stores, car parking for 3 cars...and gorgeous views! There are lovely local walks by forests, lochs, mountains, moors, and the rocky coastline. A tiny stream flows through the cottage's wild garden, where you can supervise your little ones playing next to the water. You can also watch rabbits, sheep, deer, and birds of prey from the cottage's large 'picture' windows. Please consult the listing details, your maps and guidebooks so that you fully understand the remoteness of the property and to help plan your journey and holiday. Within the living room of the cottage, there is a small collection of books on mindfulness. THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: Inner Sound cottage is in a very quiet area of the remote Isle of Raasay (which is reached by ferry from the Isle of Skye). However, a few miles south of the cottage, there is Raasay House Hotel with its restaurant, bistro, bar, and outdoor activities. At Inverarish village, there is a shop and post office, while at Clachan, you will find a distillery and gift shop. It is only 14 minutes drive from the cottage to the ferry, which takes a mere 25 minutes 'over the sea to Skye', enabling you to take day trips to Skye. The nearest supermarkets are at pretty Portree and bonny Broadford on the Isle of Skye. As well as a colourful harbour, Portree has banks, cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shop, cinema, swimming pool, library, gift and book shops, tourist information centre, fuel stations and supermarkets.
