St Simons Island Beach Rentals proudly presents a historic gem, Butler Cottage, along with the opportunity to stay in a piece of St Simons Island's rich history. You'll be surrounded by charm and character while enjoying modern day conveniences. The cottage is located in the heart of the Village, convenient to shopping, restaurants, and the Pier. There is plenty of room for the entire family with a primary suite, secondary suite, third bedroom, and a fun bunkroom for the kids! Two separate living areas as well as a parlor area are wonderful gathering spaces, in addition to expansive porches that are perfect for lazy afternoon porch sittin'. There's no better way to be whisked away to island time than staying at Butler Cottage.

Butler Cottage was built in 1913. It was originally part of the “Waycross Colony” and sat beneath the St Simon's lighthouse. The Waycross Colony was a group of Summer Cottages built starting in 1890 and was the island’s first subdivision!! So named because many of the families were from the Waycross area. The families came mostly during the Summer Season. It was a generational community and thrived for a long time, until it was mostly destroyed by fire in 1935. Butler Cottage presides in “King City".
Fortunately, Butler Cottage escaped that event as it had been rolled down the street on logs to its current location. Butler Avenue was a dirt road then.
I don’t know who that early family was that owned the home … but, in 1940 a fella named "Lefty “ Butler bought it. Lefty was a professional ball player. His given name was Charles Thomas Butler (1906-1964). He was a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. He batted right but threw left-handed! Butler played professional baseball in Montreal and Philadelphia before moving here during WWII to help build Liberty Ships. After the war, he began a 3rd career in local recreation and sports. He organized the Little League, the Babe Ruth League, and football programs from informal sandlot teams that played near the Cloister Hotel or on a field now occupied by the Farmer’s Market. The programs he created attracted over 6,000 youngsters every Spring.
Butler’s skill in attracting corporations, groups and individual adults to his favorite cause was legendary. Sea Pak, Sea Island Company, Civinette Club, and Rotary Club were major-league supporters of the Little League. St Simons Methodist and Baptist churches, along with local American Legion members pitched in to establish and sustain leagues for the older players.
“Butler Field” was dedicated to him and his many contributions on opening day in 1958. Butler Field is the baseball field north of Frosty’s on Mallery St in the Village.
He was perhaps the first professional athlete to live in St Simons. And he had a HUGE impact on the community. His wife, Carolyn, was a third-grade teacher at St Simons Elementary School for years. Ask any local, and they will tell you about Miss Butler! After school, she taught piano lessons in the room we now know as the Foyer.
Doc Hollaway purchased Butler Cottage from the Butler family. His family owned the cottage for 20 years as a Summer Cottage. And was purchased from him by the current family. We are happy to share this St Simons Island gem!
