Historic family-run working ranch with 12,000 acres to ride, fish and explore | Cabin in Roscoe

4 Bedroom Cabin in Roscoe
Since 1901, the Mackay family has been hosting friends and guests at the Lazy E L Ranch. Thirty miles from Yellowstone National Park, the ranch has over 12,000 stunning acres adjacent to the Beartooth Mountains. Come to the Lazy E L to experience over 100 years of history; an endless variety of horseback riding terrain; an authentic working cattle ranch; fishing, rafting, hiking and access to unspoiled Montana wilderness. The Lazy E L Ranch is home to a variety of wildlife including deer, elk, moose, bears, mountain lions, bald eagles, Sandhill cranes, coyotes and wolves.
Built in the 1930's, Summer Cabin showcases turn of the century craftsmanship and unparalleled rustic charm. There are four comfortable bedrooms - two with king beds and two with twin beds - some featuring stone fireplaces and spectacular mountain views. Sit on one of the beautiful porches and read a book or just enjoy the view. The Summer Cabin offers three newly renovated bathrooms and a kitchenette with a washer/dryer. Just steps away, in the main barnyard, you will have use of the Cook House, featuring a well-appointed commercial kitchen and dining room where you can prepare meals at your leisure or even hire in a Private Chef.
There is nothing quite like horseback-riding on the Lazy E L, whether trail-riding through the woods, along the West Rosebud River or through open grasslands among the 2,000 head of cattle that graze the ranch each summer. Riding is arranged through local outfitters who have been taking family and guests riding on the ranch and in nearby national forest lands for decades. Horseback riding is only available to our booked guests, we do not offer day rides.
The ranch lies across three valleys, spanning from the East Rosebud River to the West Rosebud River. The West Rosebud offers five miles of private river access for some of the best fly-fishing in Montana. The Shorey Cabin, situated on the river near the southern border of the ranch - adjacent to Custer National Forest - is the perfect place for an evening cookout after a day on the river. Shorey's is also a great picnic destination while on a day horseback ride.
The Beartooth Mountains offer incomparable hiking opportunities for all levels. The beautiful East Rosebud Canyon connects a series of pristine mountain lakes. Known as 'The Beaten Path,' this trail is for hikers who want to explore up to 25 miles of unparalleled wilderness landscape connecting Cooke City [near the northeast gate to Yellowstone Park] to the East Rosebud. Also nearby, you can hike the West Rosebud to Mystic Lake or explore the Stillwater Canyon with its raging waterfall [a very different experience depending whether you are on foot or on horseback].
In Absarokee, MT, just 15 miles away, you can whitewater raft along the Stillwater and Yellowstone Rivers, guided by Adventure Whitewater, complete with cliff jumping and frequent bald eagle sightings.
To top it all off, there are great dining options in the area. Roscoe [4 miles from the ranch] is home to the Grizzly Bar, famous for its steaks and burgers. Absarokee [12 miles from the ranch] is Wildflower Kitchen offering chef prepared family pub food. Red Lodge, just 25 minutes to the southeast, features some terrific cuisine with choices ranging from the upscale Carbon County Steakhouse to local favorites including Cafe Regis [vegetarian specialties], Black Canyon Bistro and the Red Lodge Pizza Co.
Whether you are just looking for a little downtime or wanting to 'take-on' the great outdoors, there is no place quite like the Lazy E L Ranch. You can spend your whole visit discovering all the ranch has to offer, or use it as a base to explore Yellowstone Park and the surrounding Beartooth-Absaroka Wilderness.
