Perched on the Penobscot Bay, the Cow Palace was built in 1867, and is a fully restored 4,000 square foot summer cottage with 6 bedrooms/3 baths. The 2-acre property is surrounded by the Penobscot Bay, and includes water and forest views from every window, and we border a 156 acre Sate Park: enjoy the walking trails, beaches, and lighthouse of Fort Point State Park. Perfect for extended family vacation or group retreat! This is a rare and magical spot, much loved.
The Cow Palace is authentic historic Maine charm with all the modern comforts and conveniences of a full restoration. We are located on a quiet, dead-end street just steps away from the Lighthouse. Enjoy the deep wrap-around porch with breathtaking views of the Penobscot Bay; the artist’s studio in the sunroom; and the beauty of our antique barn nestled against the deep Maine woods. The Cow Palace is on Cape Jellison, which is a rare and beautiful quiet spot on the Maine coast, yet only 15 minutes from the bustling town of Belfast, which has fabulous restaurants, a world-famous lobster pound, and theater and music. Only 35 minutes away are the renowned sailing towns of Castine and Camden; in just under an hour you are in Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Our spot on Cape Jellison offers serenity, long water views, and many hiking and biking options. The Cow Palace was the first house built on Lighthouse Road, and commands an impressive view of water and woods.
Enter the house through the spacious boot-room, where you’ll find an array of lawn games such as of bocce and croquet, games and beach toys/shoes, and a full sized fridge. The kitchen has pink granite countertops and stainless appliances, including toaster, microwave, coffee-maker, dishwasher, lobster pots, and complete cooking spices, oil, and coffee and tea. The kitchen features original pass-through filled with antique fiesta-ware to the epic dining room, with a farmhouse table and dining for 12. The library on the first floor has a fold-out queen sofa that could easily be a seventh bedroom, and includes an en-suite bathroom, and the spacious living room has two full couches and a large, smart TV.
There are six bedrooms on the top two floors: three kings, three queens (one bedroom with two queens), and one room with two twin beds; all have high quality new mattresses, luxurious linens, and 8+ feet tall windows. On each floor there is a large, full bathroom, with plenty of fluffy towels, storage, and a washer/dryer on the second floor. The deep wrap-around porch features ample outdoor seating for 20, plus two child-sized chairs, and a picnic table. The house is simply and elegantly furnished, with a blend of modern and antique, and boasts over 500 books for summer reading. This is a perfect spot for socializing with friends and family with lots of large, communal areas, but it also offers many spaces for quiet and solitude; from the thick plastered bedrooms to the cozy side porch, there are many places to retreat from it all.
Walk less than five minutes to the historic Fort Point Lighthouse and take the trails in Fort Point State Park, which includes a sandy beach, a rocky beach, a pier, rich history, and picnicking in the woods. Explore our woods, which back into the park as well, and pick wild raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. The quiet seven-mile Cape Jellison road is great for long walks and for runners/bikers. Sears Island, the largest uninhabited island off the East Coast, is only 6 minutes away and full of wonderful trails-- walk the deserted beach or the forest road. Nearby Bucksport (11 miles) has a golf course, craft brews, shops, restaurants, grocery store, and several bakeries. Visit neighboring Searsport (8 miles) and the fascinating Maine Maritime Museum, as well as the summer flea markets.
The iconic Cow Palace has been perched on a knoll overlooking the beautiful Penobscot Bay since it was built by a Bangor family as their summer cottage in 1867.
