The cabin's private thirty acre parcel borders the George Washington National Forest which has hiking trails and spectacular scenery. The George Washington National Forest and the adjacent Jefferson National Forest combine to form one of the largest areas of public open land in the Eastern United States. Together, they cover 1.8 million acres in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.
Highland County Virginia is the southernmost area of the United States that produces maple syrup. The Maple Syrup Festival in nearby Monterey, Virginia is a popular yearly event. The Barn Quilt driving tour provides a guide to wonderful scenery in the area of Virgina known as "Little Switzerland."

In March, enjoy the "opening" of the trees, as taps are placed into the local sugar maples.

In October, celebrate the beauty of autumn at the annual Hands & Harvest Fall Foliage Festival. Held on the second weekend in October, come and observe the mountain forests transformed into a palette of russet, gold and scarlet. Local treats to sample include; apple dumplings, apple butter and Allegheny Mountain Trout, both fresh and smoked.
