Just east of Jockeyâ€™s Ridge State Park on a mile-long stretch of oceanfront beach in Nags Head, you will find the Fred Wood Cottage c. 1930 where you get a sense of what life on the Outer Banks was like many years ago. Most of the cottagesâ€™ original owners were professionals, merchants, and planters from the Albemarle region of northeastern North Carolina and Virginia. Many of the cottages have been passed down through the family and remain in the hands of descendants of the original owners as does the Fred Wood Cottage.
The survival of these cottages in the harsh climate of the Outer Banks is a testament to the value placed on the historic structures by their owners.
