The Wright Home @ Deep Creek’s design and construction was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Willits House - one of Wright's first true Prairie-style houses; as such, it is the culmination of the period of experimentation that Wright engaged in the previous few years. This house was designed for Ward Winfield Willits in 1901, who was then vice-president of Adams and Westlake Company, a brass foundry of which he was later made president. Orlando Giannini, who was employed by Willits at the time, may have been responsible for the creation of this house as he introduced Wright to Willits. Wright was known for bridging the gap between architecture and nature, which makes this house fascinating because it is a full expression of Wright's interest in reconnecting with nature and Wright's equal interest in Japanese architecture and the Dutch art movement that was simultaneously occurring.
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was an American architect and designer who is often considered one of the greatest architects of all time. His work is known for its "organic architecture" style, which emphasizes harmony between buildings and their natural environment and inhabitants. Wright's designs include:
• Fallingwater: Wright's most famous building, and possibly the most famous modern house in the world
• Johnson Wax Administration Building and Research Tower: Wright's Art Modern masterpiece.
• Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum: Wright's design changed the conversation about museum design
• Robie House: A famous prairie house in Chicago that's now on the University of Chicago campus
Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867, to a family of New England intellectuals. His mother wanted him to become a builder of beautiful buildings. Wright briefly studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin before leaving to pursue architecture in Chicago. He worked for Adler and Sullivan for six years, then joined Louis Sullivan's office as a draftsman in 1888 and opened his own practice in 1893. In 1955, at the age of 88, the university awarded Wright an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts. Twenty-eight of Wright's projects are National Historic Landmarks.
