2 Bedroom House in Grey Lynn, Auckland
On a quiet, heritage street just 5 minutes walk from Ponsonby Road, Auckland's best-loved dining and shopping zone, you’ll find a gorgeous 2-bed villa with high ceilings, sunny verandah, and bay windows to welcome morning sunshine.
The living/dining flows through French doors to a covered deck and sunny, secluded terrace, all set in a lovely, secluded garden. A good-sized bathroom features a separate shower and bath. There’s a heat pump for cosy winter warmth or open up for summer birdsong.
Our house was built in 1910 and sits in a protected heritage area of wooden villas. Extended and renovated by the current owners, there are two generous double bedrooms at the front of the house, both with Queen beds and chests of drawers, one with built in cupboards and the other with a free-standing wardrobe.
At the front of the house is a verandah which soaks up morning sunshine and from where you can see the Sky Tower, just two kilometres away. There are original polished kauri floors throughout and a collection of paintings, photographs, sculptures and drawings by New Zealand artists, including the owners.
Off the well-equipped kitchen with sliding windows opening onto the garden, the bathroom offers a large frameless glass shower or a full-sized bath.
An open-plan living area includes an eight-seat dining table, comfortable four-seater sofa and armchair, TV with Freeview and Netflix, a breakfast bar with two stools facing the kitchen, discreet washing machine and tumble dryer hidden in tall cupboards.
French doors from the dining area open onto a sheltered wooden deck with a four seat dining table and chairs and a large hanging basket chair facing the brickwork terrace surrounded by mature landscaping. Beyond that is a lawn and fruit trees including orange, lemon, apple, plum and tamarillo.
Guests will have access to the entire property, including one off-street parking space, except for a one-bedroom basement studio and the owners' office, which is kept locked during their absence.
Our aim is to make sure you have the best stay possible. If there is anything you need during your stay please let us know by messaging us through your booking platform. We respond to requests from 8am to 8pm every day.
Grey Lynn and Ponsonby are surely the best loved neighbourhoods in Auckland for eating out in style, for eclectic designer boutiques, cutting edge homewares, dealer art galleries and generally being the beachhead in which the city's so-called jetset bohemians have everything they need at their fingertips.
Our home, where we have lived since the 1990s, is in a heritage area of traditional wooden villas dating back to the early part of the 20th century, when colonial New Zealand and its cities expanded rapidly. They are largely built of native kauri timber, unthinkable now that the remaining kauri trees are themselves cherished as landmarks of the rainforests.
Grey Lynn has changed progressively over the last century from initially housing largely manual workers and their families to then being mostly a Polynesian neighbourhood, then a home for artists, writers and media people who for a couple of decades have faced an insurgent tide of smart professionals. There are still some Tongan and Samoan churches nearby where you can hear beautiful singing on a Sunday morning but, behind the houses' picturesque facades a great many now have been transformed with funky, 21st century interiors..
Within a few minutes walk of the house you will find a host of art galleries, yoga studios, boutiques and vintage clothes shops, delicious and innovative cafes and restaurants for any taste and budget, an arthouse cinema and even what I think is the first kombucha bar in the country.
Just around the corner is Grey Lynn park and a little further, maybe 30 minutes on foot, you can be sunbathing on one of several idyllic little inner city beaches, swimming in sight of the harbour bridge and next to mansions housing many of the country's rich and famous.
Walk the other way and you can reach the CBD within 20 minutes and a little further on you'll be at the ferry terminal, the gateway to the many fascinating and stunning islands of the Hauraki Gulf, including gorgeous Waiheke Island, the sleeping volcano of Rangitoto and the fabulous bird sanctuary that is Tiritiri Matangi, all of which are highly recommended.
There is off-street parking available for one vehicle only. The downstairs studio, with a separate entrance, is rented separately and there may at times be guests there.
