Chalet Ecosse is an old family-built stone cow shed and hayloft dating from the 1850s which can sleep 8 people. Built into the mountain side, it has been sympathetically renovated to provide very spacious and comfortable accommodation on two levels comprising four bedrooms, two toilets, two showers with a large open plan living/dining and kitchen area. This is a large, warm, open-plan space with traditional beamed ceilings, a wood burning glass fronted fireplace, comfortable seating and a large dining table. WINTER Chalet Ecosse is situated in the south facing Tarentaise village of Les Echines Dessous, overlooking the Les Arcs ski resort. To ski in Les Arcs, you drive to the bottom of the funicular in Bourg St Maurice (10-15 minutes), park your car and buy your ski pass. The funicular will take you to the family resort of Arcs 1600. From this point you can ski the entire Les Arcs area including Arcs 1800, Arcs 1950, Arcs 2000 and the beautiful villages of Villaroger, Peisey-Nancroix and Vallandry. If you need more of a challenge, you can take the two-tiered Vanoise Express cable car which connects Les Arcs directly to the ten resorts that form the huge La Plagne ski area. Les Arcs, Peisey-Vallandry and La Plagne together make up the 400km ski area of Paradiski, containing the biggest concentration of uninterrupted world-class ski resorts in the world, with a total of 60 lifts and 425 km of pistes, with 152 green/blue (beginner) runs, 79 red (intermediate) runs, and 22 black (expert) runs. Other nearby resorts include Ste Foy (a 30 minute drive), La Rosiere (connecting to Italy) and Val d'Isere (both 40 minutes). SUMMER Chalet Ecosse provides a peaceful, mountain base full of character and charm. The village of Les Echines Dessous is very quiet and peaceful and still supports farmers living a traditional way of life. Milk from the beautiful, brown Tarine cows, whose bells can often be heard tinkling across the mountainside, is collected daily from many local farms and goes to make creamy Beaufort cheese, the king of Gruyere. Many walks begin right on your doorstep - walk up past Les Echines Dessus to the Forte de la Platte where you can sample goats' cheese and yoghurt. Keep going up and you will come to Les Cinq Lacs, where you can explore the lakes, which are of glacial origin, and where you will take in one of the most beautiful panoramas in the whole of the Haute-Tarentaise. There are activities galore in the Summer months to suit every taste from hiking, biking, golf and fishing to paragliding, white water rafting and Summer skiing. Experience the excitement of the Tour de France, which passes through the Cormet de Roselend just below the village. Keep going along this road to discover the Vallee des Glaciers, where you can see wild ibex and marmots and take in the incredible beauty of the mountains, covered in wild flowers. Finish your day with a traditional meal of tartiflette, raclette, crozets, diots or tarte aux myrtilles then, no matter how hot it's been during the day, enjoy an invigorating, restful sleep in the cool, mountain air.
