Travel Purpose: business
Positive: A work in progress, with improvements coming (I was told). Nice place on a budget, nice host, main concern is irregular water pressure and no hot water (all elaborated below). I believe I was the first person to rent this place from booking.com and as such, I am writing a fairly in depth review. Firstly, Marky (the owner) is very hospitable, friendly and accomodating. He recently built the flat atop his family’s home with a nice view over Puerto Galera Boulevard and ocean vista. The apartment is a small duplex, two story dwelling with a fairly steep spiral staircase. There was a level of lack-of-finish when I stayed, like some paint splatter and gaps in the edges of the flooring boards (aesthetic issues only). Fixtures include: A lounge room with couch, TV and small table with a few plates basic kitchen utensils. Upstairs has a balcony with some seating, a fairly firm double bed and a small shelving unit. The bathroom included a vanity with sink, flushable toilet with hose, and a shower. However, it is limited at the moment as (when I stayed) there was no hot water at all, with only a cold water tap in sink and shower. Twice in my four night stay the mains water pressure dropped so that there was no water available for a period of a few hours each time (Marky provided approximately 15L of bottled water for this time to wash and flush the toilet as required). Access to the property is via some back alleys and many flights of stairs, roughly equivalent to three stories from ocean level. The first time arriving you will need to be shown the route (by Marky in my case) as no phone based mapping app will be able to navigate you there (to my knowledge). The only alternative might be a combined satellite image and photographic based turn-by-turn map to guide guests.
Negative: The walk from the boulevard to the accomodation could be daunting if you’re expecting heavily touristy spots with nice wide streets. It is a bit of a maze with narrow back alleys, typical of much of the Phillipines if you get off the beaten path. Additionally, as a side note, the Puerto Galera boulevard is also largely vehicle free and you will likely have to walk from the main Street along the foreshore to wherever you’re staying (porters were available on arrival if you like). Marky has assured me that there is some ongoing works in progress to the flat. These are to include: Raising the water tank to increase the head pressure, thereby ensuring a more reliable water supply. Installing a hot water system (although the bathroom did not seem plumbed for hot water as far as I could tell). In summary, a couple of issues with the bathroom, but Marky seems like a very apt host and with some upgrades I can see this being a comfortable stay on a budget.
