The romantic Captain's Quarters are located in a spacious open-plan cottage on the McFarland Estate at the center of Christmas Cove. The estate contains several buildings and over an acre of lawns and gardens with commanding views of the Cove, Johns Bay and the Atlantic. Part of a compound which was once the center of boat-building in the area, the Captain's Quarters were totally renovated in 2007 to resemble the interior of a ship. This magic was achieved by adding gleaming hardwood walls and floors, a high beamed ceiling, charming red and green running lights in addition to ample overhead lighting, and even an authentic ship's mast! At night you may hear the sound of waves hitting the shore of Johns Bay and imagine you are being rocked on a gentle sea in your own safe and cozy ship. Cathedral ceilings add to the feeling of spaciousness. The new deck off the living room offers private views of Christmas Cove, perfect for sunset-watching! And just across the front lawn is the massive shipbuilding barn, where you may store your bicycles, kayaks or water equipment. A new bathroom and kitchen were added in 2007 when the building was renovated. The Captain's Quarters boasts a stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, kingmattress, linens, kitchen utensils and china. A daybed can be added in the living room as an additional sleeping space if desired. Air conditioning is available, though frequently not needed because of regular offshore breezes. Have the best of both worlds--the ambience of living like a ship's captain of old while enjoying high speed internet access and cable TV. Rutherford Island is the quintessential Maine coastal getaway--sea views all around, glittering night skies, perfect summer temperatures. When you return home from antiquing, touring, sailing or other salty sports, enjoy a glass of wine on the deck while you watch the sun set over Christmas Cove, listen to the waves crashing on Johns Bay and stare at the amazing night stars and Milky Way.
