The village of Sandhurst is situated in Kent, near the border with East Sussex and is close to the villages of Hawkhurst and Northiam. Its name translates as a place that is wooded in sandy ground and is thought to have been used as the village that provided shelter and sustenance to soldiers on their way to the Battle of Hastings, and the survivors returning to London.
The main road to Rye runs through the village and is a popular trading route. Visitors to the area should ensure they take a trip to Rye which is one of the Cinque ports and has an abundance of cobbled streets, bijou shops and boutiques and a variety of wonderful places to eat. On the way, you will pass through Newenden, the smallest village in Kent. The game of cricket is understood to have been created in Newenden when in 1300 the son of King Edward I, the future Prince of Wales, played a game called Creag. To this day it is home to an enthusiastic cricket team.
Bodiam Castle is owned by the National Trust and is a beautiful moated castle built in 1385. There are various events held throughout the year and it is really worth a visit.
If you enjoy being on the water visit Bodiam Boating Station at Newenden and take a lazy boat trip to Rye or Bodiam Castle, or enjoy paddle boarding and canoes - great fun for the family!. Also a must is a trip on The Kent and Sussex Railway which runs for 10 miles from Tenterden through the Rother levels, past the village of Northiam to Bodiam.
