Man O War is a small island in the Abaco region of the Bahamas. For those who wish to spend their holiday in complete relaxation, the quiet nature of Man-O-War Cay will be a delightful reprieve from the bustle of of the sister islands of Abaco. The island is about 2.5 miles long(4 km), relatively narrow, often less than 350 ft. between the harbor and beach side of the Island. The Narrows is a viewing and gathering place to enjoy the Atlantic and the Sea of Abaco, separated by only 30ft. Bien Choisi is located just south of "The Narrows". The island is famous for its boat-building history. William H. Albury was famous in the country for his tremendous boat building skills. He built his first schooner at the age of 14. Albury died in 1972, but the boat building on the Cay still lives on. The last big boat built by the William H. Albury Ship Yard and "Uncle Will", as he had come to be known, was the Esperanto. The Esperanto was later renamed The William H. Albury in his honor, and is currently being restored on the island. At the northern end of the harbour road is Albury's Sail Shop, it occupies a building overlooking the water. The floor space is devoted to the manufacture and display of brightly colored canvas garments and accessories. They're made using 8-ounce cotton duck fabric, which once served as sailcloth for the community's boats. When synthetic sails came into vogue, four generations of Albury women put the cloth and their talents to use. Man-O-War has it's own resident master of wood carving, Hartley Albury, his studio is located on the waterfront. Across the way is his brother Joe Albury, owner of Joe's Studio who has been selling his handcrafted items for years all carved out of local hardwood or an occasional piece of driftwood. Joe's Studio is one of three shops where you can admire Bahamian Artistry, Sally's Seaside Boutique with clothes, accessories, and tableware all made from the handmade fabrics of the Bahamas and the Painted Fish located at the marina. There are two restaurants the Dock and Dine and Hibiscus Cafe, there are no liquor stores on the island. It is best recommended that you buy your liquor in Marsh Harbor before you arrive in Man O War. The Hibiscus Cafe does welcome BYO but there may be a small corking fee. There is a nice selection of Ice Cream outside the building, open late afternoon until 9pm. The Dock n' Dine has just acquired a beer and wine license to be served to dine in customers, their corking fee is excessive, so I recommend you do not bring your own. Several residents prepare take out meals during the week. That schedule is available on request. The island's coffee shop is located in the Museum, all sales support the Museum. There is also a small convenience store open when Man O War grocery is not, it has baked goods and will also have sandwiches, baked goods and hot dogs and hamburgers on the weekends. 2 four passengers golf carts are available for guests to use, drivers must be a minimum of 25 years old. The diving, snorkeling and water sports around the island are truly exceptional. In 1862 the USS Adirondack, wrecked on the reef just northeast of Man-O-War. One of their cannons from the wreck was salvaged and is mounted in front of Joe's Studio. For the fisherman in you, Abaco is recognized as some of the best fishing with tournaments taking place throughout the year. If fishing is your thing or you want to give it a try arrangements can be made to hire a local guide, let us know. Man O War is a 15 minute boat ride from Marsh Harbour, you can access the island by the H&L or Albury Ferry Services. Arrangements can sometimes be made with the boat rental companies to pick you up in Marsh Harbour. There is a supermarket in Marsh Harbor, Maxwells, where you can grocery shop before you travel to Man O War. Arrangements can be made to have you picked up at Marsh Harbor Airport, stop for groceries and then stop at the liquor before you make your way over to the island. Any groceries that you might need during your stay can be adequately supplemented by Man O War grocery store on the island.
