What to do, What to see, Where to go At La Surprise - Boutique Gites of the Dordogne What to do ❖ Cycling in the area Not only is a peace and green way to travel locally, but you will discover and see so much more, at a calmer pace. We can arrange for bikes to be delivered, from a local great company, direct to your holiday Gite So no problem about bringing your own bikes, if you come by your own car - with potential security concerns on the way . We provide a secure and dry barn where they can be stored. If you opt for the modern electric bikes to rent, they can be fully charged at our barn overnight for your days out ❖ Local walks La Surprise is situated in the ‘Golden Triangle’, in the Dordogne area of France. Beautiful, mainly flat area with quiet country roads, local quaint villages to visit, like Monpazier, Belves, Beaumont, all with a good choice of local restaurants, bars, cafes and shops to visit. Its all just a short car or bike ride away, and we can provide you with a lunch hamper including chilled wine for the trip out. ❖ Boat Rides Why not take a short trip down the Dordogne river, to see some of the great Chateaux in the area- of which there are over1,000, mainly built during the 100 years war from 1337. England won large amounts of territory, and used, to good effect, The Longbow, particularly at Crecy and Agincourt ! Don’t bring this fact up during the boat trip, as you may end up overboard! ❖ Wine Chateaux locally Being in the Dordogne, there are many local vineyards, within a 40 minutes drive. Worth thinking about are the close and spectacular world famous vineyards of Bordeaux. Which include Medoc, Saint Emiliion Grand Cru, Saint Estephe and my favourit-Margaux. They are only a 2 and a half hours drive from here, so leave just after breakfast, go there for the ‘tastings’ and lunch and head back here and sample your stock over the holiday here. I can help you with the Margaux if needed! Be careful how much ‘sampling’ is done before the drive back! What to see ❖ Historical Site La Roque Saint Christophe is a fascinating Unesco World Heritage prehistoric settlement and an amazing place to visit, that you wont be expecting. A must see as its a settlement sandwiched between rock with wonderful views of the area. You have probably never seen such a place anywhere else in the world. ❖ Markets Sarlat le Canada is probably the largest and most impressive, on a Wednesday and Saturday. Not only can you buy the best of fruit & veg locally produced, as well as meat, poultry / duck but also browse the clothing and locally produced hand made items - like leather goods, soaps, foie gras, local wine. And end your shopping spree with a great meal from one of the many restaurants Why not check out Villereal or Issigeac markets, also quite close to us, which are great markets but not as busy as Sarlat - probably the largest in the area ❖ Balooning Want to mark that special anniversary, birthday,‘bucket list item’ or maybe propose!!. Why not take a balloon trip!! Never taken one.? Do it here for the first time!! They can be taken from various places near to us.along the Dordogne River, where you can see magnificent views and scenes as you drift down the river, past gorgeous Chateaux, lovely medieval villages, vineyards and amazingly empty but beautiful unspoilt landscape. Book with us and we can arrange everything for you. ❖ Days out at some amazing Chateaux and gardens Over 1,00 chateaux in the area. They range from previous homes of people like Josephine Baker, Chateau & Jardins des Milandes, the famous Jazz singer, that helped many Jewish children escape during WWII, to Beynac et Cazenac, scenes on the river and village from the film ‘Chocolat’. Then there are the gardens of Marqueyssac, overlooking the Dordogne river, with its beautiful hedges beautifully sculpted, and the hilltop village of Domme, where the film director Stanley Kubrick had a home ( The Shining, 2001 A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange,, Full metal jacket, Dr Strangelove,). Or try Rocamadour, the sacred city, a famous UNESCO world Heritage site of pilgrimage of Kings and paupers See many things like the 12 century Black Madonna,( visited still by many people from around the world) carved from walnut wood, and marvel at the Great Staircase of 216 steps!! and the two electric lifts to the top I found after the walk up! Famous for Rocamadour cheese, yum!, the Hot Air Balloon Festival, firework displays and more. Where to go ❖ Some of the must see places close to La Surprise Roque Gageuc - Iconic village , below the large chateau above, when boat trips can be taken, or Canoes and Kayake can be rented for the day. Some great restaurants, low cost or 5 star. Domme - spectacular views to the Dordogne river, great old hilltop village top explore, places to eat and caves below to see. Eymet - lovely village, nice to walk around, many restaurants. Favoured by the Brits , many who live there or close by Monpazier - Lovely old Bastide Village ( fortified village and built during 100 years war, around a central market area.). Many small narrow streets with great medieval houses, views around every corner, places to eat or drink and close by Tremolat - another quaint village , close to the Dordogne river, with places to eat, from 5 Star to simple lunch dishes You can even fly there by helicopter and land at one of the Hotels. Cool eh! Sarlat le Canada - a magnificent medieval town built in the 9th century!,Great to explore and lots of places to shop or simply have a coffee or lunch outside and watch the world go by! Full of historical houses and places to see including the Cathedral, the market days on Wednesday and Saturday, Manoir de Gisson, that dates from 13th century Sarlat has the highest density of historic monuments and buidings in France. A must see if you are in the area Beaumont en Perigord A pretty small village that hosts some great Summer evening food markets. Many locals, and tourists, come to the evening market for the live music and in the main square, a food market. Tables are laid up for you, so wander the local food producers, that will sell you everything from local wines and beer to Duck, Steaks & salads to Oysters and even Fish and Chips! A wonderful evening out, and not expensive for an experience with local food producers and local bands. Many go here more than once during their holiday here, as its a place to chose a varity of food with some great live bands playing.
