Experience authentic cottage living on Peaks Island at the ‘Rook Cottage’, a turn of the century dwelling: travel from Portland’s ‘Old Port’ via a Casco Bay Lines ferry and view the panorama of the islands of Casco Bay; relax on a wraparound covered porch with rocking chairs; walk to the beach for a swim; bike to the back side of the island and watch the waves crash on the rocks; explore the interior of the island and discover World War II fortifications; rent a golf cart for a leisurely ride of the island. Or, just do nothing - watch the grass grow, the flowers bloom and the birds feeding!
Located a mile from the bustle of the village [Down Front] and the ferry dock, the Rook Cottage sits on a grassy road surrounded by gardens, stone walls constructed by a fourth-generation family member, a field and several other cottages that are summer homes for families who have been coming to the island for generations. Down Front provides the opportunity to dine out at one of three restaurants; purchase groceries and lobsters; buy Peaks Island gift items and ice cream; rent golf carts, bicycles or kayaks; visit the library; post your mail - notwithstanding having the convenience of a coin operated laundromat and gas station! TEIA (the Trefetheren Evergreen Improvement Association aka “The Club”) can be seen from the porch of the Rook Cottage and provides week-long memberships for visitors to enjoy tennis, sailing, swimming, indoor fitness, camps for kids. The Rook Cottage has been owned and occupied by family members since 1945. Each generation has lovingly left its mark on the cottage through their maintenance of (early on by the “Peaks Island” way - do what you can with what you have!) and renovations and improvements to the cottage while maintaining the integrity and beauty of the original structure. The bathroom has transformed from a room with a metal tub for bathing (hot water provided by heating water on the stove) to a full bath with tiled shower stall; an outdoor shower has been installed; the kitchen has evolved from having a kerosene stove, hot plate and ice box to a modern space, while maintaining a cottage-like ambiance. All windows are functional! The cottage next to the Rook cottage was bought, partially torn down and transformed into an open space for play (or parking) and remodeled into a bunkhouse and workshop. A deck has been constructed to connect the two structures for grilling or relaxing in the sun.
The cottage comfortably sleeps six (one bedroom with double bed on the first floor, one bedroom with double bed on the second floor, one bedroom with twin beds on the second floor) and for the adventuresome the “Bunkhouse” sleeps two. The living room provides ample room for viewing cable television or WiFi streaming and an area dedicated to reading, playing board games or working on jigsaw puzzles. The dining room sits six. The second floor has an open area for computer and office activity.

o Guests will be greeted by owners for a walk through and discussion of house rules.
o Minimum of seven nights stay; maximum of 6 guests. Seven night rental begins and ends on Saturday.
o Cost $260 per night (sheets and towels provided); $245 per night (sheets and towels provided by guests).
o Check in Saturday 12:00 pm day of arrival; check out Saturday by 9:00 am day of departure. Firm.

o . Rental contract provided by owner after booking must be signed and returned prior to arrival.
