Built of stone, it is believed to be over 500 years old and retains the original chestnut beams and other features such as the grinding stones and wheels that were used to make chestnut flour. The Mill is built into the mountainside, nestling in a chestnut woodland garden in a beautiful conservation area. A stream runs down the mountain, through the private garden. Gello di Pescaglia is a characteristic hilltop village at 500m altitude. The Mill enjoys a great deal of privacy, despite the village setting. There is a sunny, south-facing terrace, ideal for sunbathing and dining, and with a variety of herbs for your culinary use. A detachable canopy is provided to give shade, along with two mature olive trees. The views from the terrace are breathtaking and take in the historical city of Lucca and the surrounding countryside. The French doors of the living room open onto the terrace which is perfect for eating and drinking al fresco, with the stream providing your musical background. In early to mid-summer you can also enjoy a spectacular nightly firefly display, lighting up the shrubs and trees around the terrace. The Mill is cosy yet spacious and comfortable, and very well equipped. The wood-burning stove is ideal for those cooler evenings at the beginning and end of the summer season. It is perfectly located for a stress-free, romantic and relaxing break in stunning surroundings, only half an hour from Lucca. This is a building of historical interest, and once played a central role in the life of villagers during the Renaissance. Its significance has been recognized by the local council, which has erected a board with detailed description (in Italian) outside. Walkers will find plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside.
