1 Bedroom Apartment in Truchas

Truchas is a 300+ years old Hispanic village located at 8000 feet altitude in the shadow of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains on a still extant land grant given to the first settlers by the king of Spain. The local population count their families' residence here back to those early settlers. Buildings and homes are mostly old adobes which give the ambience of an earlier time. And, in some ways, it is just that: a community of people within an older, more respectful and helpful culture. Located in the studio of renowned painter/poet Alvaro Cardona-Hine, the open one-room casita consists of a sleeping area, a kitchenette and bath with shower and washer-dryer. Cozy and welcoming, it is intended for painters--professional, amateur, even beginners--or writers, or just regular folks for a one-week stay beginning on Mondays with check-in about 3 pm and checkout the following Monday at 11 am. It is set up with one person in mind, but could also accommodate a couple if they can share a double-sized bed. A car is a necessity, either your own or a rental. Adjoining the casita is a studio space with easels, various painting tools, a sink for washing up brushes, a sofa for contemplation, and outside, a covered porch (portal) for taking in the beautiful view of the Jemez Mountains to the west and the Rio Grande valley below. Renowned painter and poet, Alvaro Cardona-Hine, died in August, 2016, and Barbara McCauley, also a painter and Alvaro's wife, chose to create this space in his memory as, besides being involved in his own creations, Alvaro loved to watch people open up and discover their own creative abilities. He would teach either poetry or painting to anyone who asked, often without charging a fee. His generosity was legendary. The casita/studio is located away from the house and gallery and has its own entry and parking area so that it is a very private space where one can work, dream or meditate. The village now is also home to many artists, artisans and interesting people so more sociable folks can visit studios and galleries for inspiration or to meet other artists. And the newly-opened Mercantile and Cafe, where one can get an expresso, or a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner, also serves as a meeting place for many of the locals. Other dining choices nearby include the famous Rancho de Chimayo restaurant, renowned for its fine northern New Mexican cuisine and in Penasco, a 20 minute drive north, is the excellent Sugar Nymphs Bistro with pizza, fabulous dinners, salads and 'to-die-for' desserts. Santa Fe and Taos are both about an hour's drive away if you need a 'city fix', and both cities offer excellent restaurants, museums and cultural events. Pueblos of various Native American tribes abound in the area and are usually open to visitors, sometimes with their own events. The nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains overlooking the village offer hiking and camping. Locals with horses can sometimes be enticed to guide visitors by horse or on foot. In winter, skiing is about an hour and a half away, either in Santa Fe or Taos. New Mexico offers many diverse possibilities what with it's tri-cultural ambience. We encourage people to leave their tech stuff behind and bask in their own solitude and silence, but, life being what it is now, the library, only a half-block away, provides Wifi and cell phone service is usually available from our location. There is a radio and CD player in the studio, but the main function of this retreat is exactly that: retreat, a chance to be still and go deep within. The villagers are quiet people, polite and respectful and we urge our visitors to honor that. Sorry, but you may not bring any pets as our two resident dogs do not appreciate other animals in their territory. See you soon!
