Between Avenida del Libertador and the coast, there are large areas of open space, including sports clubs, the extensive CeNARD (a high-performance athletics center), and leisure areas.
One of the newer green areas, Parque de los Niños, opened in 1999, was the site of a "city beach" opened by mayor Mauricio Macri in early 2009. It has no access to water, but has an entire acre of sand , and umbrellas. This was the first of several new parks of this style in the city.
