Penarth is within the stunning welsh countryside near the village of Hundred House and 7 miles from the market town of Builth Wells. The house is the perfect base for walkers, family groups or friends as can sleep up to 10 guests.
Penarth, as it was known in the Middle Ages, has a long and proud history. The house is referred to in poems by the renowned Welsh poet Lewis Glyn Cothi from Carmarthenshire, who was born around 1420 in the remote village of Rhydcymerau. He composed his poems between 1447 and 1489. One of his last poems is addressed to Henry Tudor (the Father of Henry VIII) after he was crowned king Henry VII. In another poem addressed to Bedo Chwith we learn that Lewis Glyn Cothi received a warm welcome at Penarth and was given three silver coins with an inscription of a plough on them. The house is therefore at least 800 years old!
Penarth Castle Mound, dating back to the medieval period, is just a 10 minute-walk away and is well worth a visit for the history buff in the group. Just 10-minutes’ walk from the property you have open access to common land and open hillside, ideal for an afternoon stroll or a picnic.
This property is perfect for exploring all that Mid Wales has to offer and is 30 minutes’ drive from the Elan Valley, 40 minutes’ drive from the Brecon Beacons and half an hour drive from Hay on Wye, which is world famous for its second-hand and antiquarian bookshops. Hay on Wye also hosts a Book Festival every year in May.
