La Bergerie is a fantastic holiday cottage for up to six people on the Isle of Skye. The location is very special and honestly one of the best on the island. Situated on the Waternish Peninsula, La Bergerie overlooks Loch Bay and the stunning village of Stein and enjoys views out beyond the uninhabited small isles of Isay, Mingay and Clett to the distant Outer Hebrides. It is one of the best spots in the whole of the Highlands.
La Bergerie means ‘the sheepfold’, and the name makes sense as soon as you arrive on the Waternish Peninsula because you’ll have woolly neighbours for the duration of your stay. The house has been built in a traditional style and has some French influences, but surprisingly the house is in fact a relatively modern building. It is therefore very well insulated, making it warm and cosy.
Driving up to La Bergerie from the minor road you see how well located the house is, perched above neighbours with views that you thought you could only dream of.
There’s plenty of space to park three cars and access to the house is right by the top of the drive. Before entering the property though you’ll want to rush round to the front of the house and have another look at the view. You’ll quickly discover the lovely front garden with mature flower beds and well-placed seating areas. Plans will rapidly be made to sit out with a drink to soak up the vistas. Keep an eye out for the golden eagles and sea eagles; you might even spot dolphins and seals in the bay.
Entering La Bergerie there is a small hall for boots and coats which leads into the open-plan living and dining room. The living space is large and has an open fireplace and many windows showcasing the bay and distant islands. The dining space has a vaulted ceiling and overlooking it is the galleried first floor landing. The stairs lead up to the first floor from the living space. But before upstairs there is a master suite downstairs that has an accessible wet room shower room. There is a zip-and-link super kingsize bed and the view from this room is extraordinary. There is another accessible bathroom downstairs as well as a cute kitchen that has all the modern appliances you need to cook up a storm.
On the first floor there are two further bedrooms and a family bathroom. One of the bedrooms looks across the bay and the other up the hill across La Bergerie’s croft.
A real asset of being based at La Bergerie, beyond the out-of-this-world setting, is the fact that you can walk down to the village of Stein and enjoy both a Michelin-starred restaurant and a celebrated Highland inn. There’s also an excellent coffee shop a walk away that’s open most of the year. Boat trips to the Hebridean islands and also wildlife watching boat trips are available from the Stein harbour subject to weather and season.
You could stay on Waternish the entire holiday and be completely satisfied, but there is so much more to Skye that you really must explore. Waternish is the centre peninsula in the north of the Isle of Skye and this means you are within easy reach of all of the big tourism hitters. To the east on Trotternish you have the Fairy Glen, the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr along with Portree. Then to the west you have Dunvegan Castle, Coral Beach and Point Neist lighthouse. Only a little further and still in the north of the island you have the Talisker Distillery as well as the Fairy Pools and Cuillin mountains. Beach 11 miles. Shop 21 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.. Hall: With storage for boots and coats.
