Our house is situated in Greece, on the southern tip of the Peloponnese, that is, on its middle finger. It is the authentic house and surrounding area out of the story ' Zorba the greek'.
The story took place here in 1917.
'.The Original Zorbas House is located in the small hamlet of Prastova, above the village of Stoupa. The nearest larger city, Kalamata, is about one hour drive away and amongst other things has a fantastic weekly market and an important harbour. The area is called Mani and the region Messenia. Prastova irradiates an enchanted tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle but at the same time only 1 km from the next village, Stoupa. The sandy beach of Kalogria, where the famous sirtaki dance from “Zorba the Greek” took place, is only a stone's throw away (2 minutes by car, 10 minutes walking). The Original Zorbas House has about 160 m² of living space (5 rooms) and is ideal for 4 to 6 persons. It is a closed ensemble with courtyard, terrace and balcony with amazing sea views and is situated about 300 m high.
Special features: The kitchen on the upper floor has direct access to the terrace. There is a transportable outside grill for the terrace. Open air barbecue with sea view!
There is a former cistern below the courtyard and the mountains and a small cypress forest behind the house, surrounded by bizarre rock formations. Towards the ocean, the view is over a group of huge eucalyptus trees. Very romantic!
In the garden, you will find a fantastic rock shower, situated between tree-high agaves and cactuses, with sea view, too! Pure Nature!
Thanks to the house's protected location, it is quiet and protected from the wind as well as shaded and cool in summer.
Together with the interesting atmosphere of the old stone house dating back to 1891 and the stories around the Original Zorbas House, the stylish ambience of the entire property offer ideal conditions for exceptional and relaxing holidays in Greece.
History: The national poet Nikos Kazantzakis from Crete operated a lignite mine from 1917 to 1918 in the hamlet of Prastova, above Kalogria, that is, Stoupa/Greece.
You can still visit the adits in direct neighbourhood of our house, from which the brown coal was extracted. It is one of the original locations of the story of Alexis Zorba. The “true Zorba story” took place in our house and was written down in the famous novel “Zorba the Greek” by Nikos Kazantzakis only in 1946.
In 1964, the novel was made into a film by Michael Cacoyannis, and is one of the biggest worldwide successes of all times, largely thanks to Anthony Quinn's brilliant acting skills and Mikis Theodorakis' famous soundtrack. Our house celebrated its 120th birthday on 24 May 2011. There is a link to our website.
Exceptional features: The house is situated right in front of a small cypress forest without neighbouring houses being overlooked. Sea views from everywhere, very quiet and unique. The house has a very good kitchen, which has direct access to the terrace. You can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the nature from the terrace and the balcony. All rooms are equipped with first class windows and doors. Swing doors with mosquito nets and inserts included.
The house is ideally suited for bridal pairs (honeymoon!) Dreamlike weeks in a protected surrounding! All our guests, who want to have a beautiful evening with delicious greek or italian food and complete entertainment in our house, can order this extra.
