Some basic facts about the building: it is a Dutch Colonial Victorian built at the turn of the 19th-century. It is on the National Historic Register and is a state historic Landmark.... has about 2000 ft.² of decks on multiple levels.
The history of the hotel is long. And this is one of the few remaining “working man Victorians” still in existence. Through the years of segregation it was one of the few hotels, which allowed African Americans to stay. We only know this through oral history and so can only surmise that it may not be accurate. In the 1960’s and early 1970’s Mohammed Ali and Sammy Davis Junior stayed at the hotel. Again, we only know this through oral history. It fell on hard times in the 1980’s and remained in bad condition for the next thirty years. Despite this, in 1993, Richard Gere shot some scenes for his film “Mr. Jones” on site. Rent at the time was $1.50 a night.
With regard to location we a five minute drive from the airport, A 15 minute walk to the Convention Center and three blocks from Balboa Park which has 17 museums, countless gardens and several theatres including the nationally acclaimed “Old Globe” theatre, and the San Diego zoo. A bus goes right past the hotel and can take visitors either downtown or North about 1 mile where a beautiful sanctuary run by the self realization fellowship since the 1903 Chicago world’s fair can be found. A big plus for staying here is that most visitors will not need to rent a car.
The Hawthorne Inn also known in earlier years as the Plainsman looks the same as when it was built in the 1890s. Even the interior hallways have not been altered. There are a wide hallways, the rooms are very soundproof, there is a public Study area adjacent to room 101...it is sunny, quiet and little used by other guests...it's like having a spare room
≈
On the first floor hallways we have collected antique maps and photographs depicting what the community looked like 100 years ago. Finally, we have heard reports and read online reports that the Hawthorne Historic Inn is haunted. So, if you see a ghost, try to get a photo but please tell us
