Poppy Cottage, just one hour's easy drive from Calais ferries or tunnel, is in the centre of the charming, historic town of Saint Valery-sur-Somme, voted second most popular village in France to visit in a recent France 3 poll. Built at the start of last century, the cottage offers cosy, centrally heated accommodation for up to four guests or, combined with its virtually identical sister Captain's Cottage next door (see photo), up to eight. It features a comfy double bedroom and a bedroom with two singles, with free bed linen and towels, and all beds made before your arrival. A well-equipped kitchen/diner has table and chairs for four and opens to a sun-trap rear courtyard ideal for al fresco breakfasts (three excellent boulangeries for freshly baked croissants or baguettes are within a short walk!). A lounge with full Wi-Fi, English and French television channels, DVD and a mini CD hi-fi system gives relaxing evenings after an enjoyable day. And the large bathroom features a quaint Picardy slipper bath as well as a large modern shower. Outside there is sunny relaxing or dining area with furniture and a barbecue, plus use of a 'secret garden' area for those quieter moments. Parking is free right outside the cottage, and your choice of modern mountain bikes will take you down the many dedicated cycle trails that lead out into the country and around the Baie de Somme. Ten minutes walk away (five by bicycle) is Saint Valery beach, where, between May and September, you will have exclusive use of our fully-equipped beach hut. It is perfect for memorable days in the sunshine, perhaps taking in refreshment in the nearby friendly bar/brasserie on the sand, as well as some incredible sunsets to round off the day. Saint Valery-sur-Somme is a fascinating town, with its historic medieval ramparted old town, herbarium, museum, and over thirty bars and restaurants to visit. A steam train runs around the bay, boats will take you to see the colony of seals on a distant beach, and the area is full of magnificent wildlife, including the famous Marquenterre bird sanctuary across the bay, and Henson horses to ride. You will not want to miss walking down to the busy, bustling Sunday morning market, where you'll find fresh produce and local delicacies. For weekly shops, a good choice of three supermarkets (Intermarche, Carrefour and Lidl) are on the outskirts of the town, and a useful Spar mini-market is four minutes walk away. We welcome your well-behaved canine friends, and a good, well-respected English-speaking vet (for Pet Passports formalities) is also at four minutes walk.
